Osmium

Evidence grade insufficient: no human trials support it, and the 30C form holds no metal. Traditional tier T1: a recognised but minor remedy in one

Home

What is Osmium? Osmium is a remedy used in homeopathy. It is made from osmium, a hard grey-blue metal. Homeopaths give it mostly for eye and throat symptoms. This is a single drug (Homeopathy). Latin: Osmium (Os). Also known as: Osmium. The remedy is watered down over and over. At 30C, no atoms of the metal are left. Tests in people do not show it works better than a dummy pill. Long use in a tradition is not proof that a thing works. This page reports both: what the tradition says, and what tests show. We keep those two things apart. How does Osmium work? There is no known way for this remedy to act on the body. At 30C, nothing of the metal is left to act. Homeopaths work from an old rule they call "like cures like". They say a metal that irritates the eyes and throat in large amounts can ease the same signs when watered down. They also hold that shaking the water at each step leaves an imprint. That idea has not been shown in a lab or in people. Chemistry does not support it. If you feel better while taking it, that can still be real. It may come from rest, from time, from care and attention, or from the placebo effect (feeling better because you expect to). What forms does Osmium come in? You will most often find Osmium as small sugar pellets that melt under the tongue. Other forms: Liquid drops in water and alcohol. Larger tablets to suck. Bulk pellets for a homeopath to dispense. Strengths are marked with a number and a letter, such as 6C, 30C or 200C. The higher the number, the more it has been watered down. At 30C and above, no metal is left. It is sold as a remedy, not as a food supplement. It gives you no minerals and no nutrition. Where it comes from: Osmium is a minor remedy in homeopathy, not a famous one. Homeopaths in the 1800s took small doses of many metals and wrote down every feeling they got. Those notes were gathered into large reference books. Osmium came into use that way, linked with watery eyes, eye pressure, a raw throat and a hoarse voice. It has been listed in homeopathic books ever since. It is used far less often than remedies such as Belladonna or Arnica. Its standing rests on those old case notes and nothing more.

Helps

What does Osmium help with? Watery, burning eyes: This is the best-known use in the tradition. Old homeopathic notes list streaming eyes that sting and feel hot. No human trial has tested Osmium for eye symptoms. If your eyes water for more than a few days, get them checked. Symptoms linked to raised pressure in the eye, such as seeing halos around lights: Homeopathic books link Osmium with rainbow rings around lamps. That sign can point to glaucoma (high pressure in the eye), which can damage sight. There is no trial evidence that Osmium helps it. Treat this sign as a reason to see an eye doctor fast, not a reason to self-treat. Hoarse voice: The tradition uses it for a rough, croaky voice that comes with throat irritation. No study has tested this. A hoarse voice lasting over three weeks needs a doctor's look. Dry, tickly cough: Old notes describe a dry cough that starts in the windpipe. No human trial supports this use. Most short coughs settle on their own. Raw, sore feeling in the windpipe: Homeopaths link the remedy to a raw, scraped feeling below the throat. This comes from case notes taken well over a century ago. No modern test backs it up.

Other forms:

Liquid drops in water and alcohol.

Where it comes from:

Osmium is a minor remedy in homeopathy, not a famous one.

Who should avoid Osmium?

  • Do not use if you have glaucoma (high pressure in the eye) and would stop, skip or delay your prescribed eye drops to try it.
  • Do not use if you have sudden eye pain, redness, blurred sight or halos around lights — get urgent eye care that same day instead.
  • Do not use if you have sudden sight loss in one eye.
  • Do not use if you are short of breath, wheezing badly or coughing up blood — these need a doctor, not pellets.
  • Do not use if you have a hoarse voice that has lasted more than three weeks without getting it checked first.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor knows and agrees.
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby under one year old without a doctor's say-so.
  • Do not use if you take disulfiram or metronidazole and the product is the alcohol-based drops.
  • Do not use if you are avoiding alcohol and only the drops are available — ask for pellets.
  • Do not use if you have a known allergy to lactose (milk sugar) and the pellets are lactose based.
  • Do not use if you plan to make it yourself from raw osmium or osmium tetroxide (a very toxic form of the metal) — never do this, as the fumes can burn your eyes and lungs.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor within a day or two if your eyes stay red, sore or watery, if your voice stays hoarse for more than three weeks, or if a cough lasts more than three weeks.

Get urgent care the same day if you have sudden eye pain, halos around lights, blurred sight, or a red eye with sickness and vomiting. This can be a sudden rise in eye pressure, and sight can be lost fast.

Call emergency services if you cannot breathe, if your lips look blue, or if you cough up blood.

Stop the remedy and speak to a doctor if you get a rash, swelling of the face or lips, or trouble swallowing.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
