Argentum metallicum

A known remedy in one tradition, homeopathy, with no human trial evidence that sets it apart from a dummy pill.

Home

What is Argentum metallicum? Argentum metallicum is a homeopathic remedy made from silver. Homeopaths give it for sore joints and a hoarse voice. It is a single remedy, not a mix of herbs. The silver is ground up, then watered down again and again. This step-by-step watering down is called serial dilution. At the common 30C strength, no silver is left in the pill. So what you take is mostly sugar, or water and alcohol in drops. Trials do not show it works better than a dummy pill (a placebo). Its standing rests on long use by homeopaths. Long use is not proof that a remedy works, and that point is not repeated later on this page. How does Argentum metallicum work? No one has shown how a 30C dose could act in the body. Homeopathy rests on two old ideas. The first is that a thing which causes signs in a well person can treat those same signs in a sick one. The second is that shaking and watering down makes the remedy act more, not less. Neither idea fits what we know about chemistry. At 30C there is no silver left to act on your cells. Any change you notice is more likely to come from time, rest, care, and belief. We say this plainly because it is what the evidence shows. What forms does Argentum metallicum come in? You will find it as small sugar pills, granules, or liquid drops. Pills are the most common form. Drops are made with water and alcohol. Both are taken by mouth. Labels show a strength, such as 6X, 6C, 30C, or 200C. A higher number means more watering down. Colloidal silver and silver wound creams are sold in the same shops. They hold real silver and are not homeopathic remedies. Do not mix the two up. Where it comes from: Silver has a long past in medicine, mostly used on wounds and skin. Argentum metallicum came into homeopathy in the 1800s. Samuel Hahnemann and his followers gave it to healthy people and wrote down what they felt. Those notes shaped its later use. From them came its picture of joint, throat, and voice-box aches. It has stayed in homeopathic books ever since. It is well known there, but it is not one of the most used remedies.

Helps

What does Argentum metallicum help with? Hoarse voice from heavy talking or singing: This is the best known use in homeopathic books. Singers, teachers, and speakers are the classic users. No human trials of this remedy for hoarse voice have been published. Rest, fluids, and voice care have far better support. Sore, worn joints in the knees and ankles: Old homeopathic notes link it to aching cartilage (the smooth pad inside a joint). The pain is said to feel worse on first moving. There is no trial evidence in people for this use. Laryngitis (swelling of the voice box): Homeopaths pick it when the voice gives out and the throat feels raw. Most laryngitis clears on its own in one to two weeks. No human trial supports this remedy for it. Dry, tickly cough: The traditional picture is a cough that starts with laughing or talking. Evidence for this is limited to homeopathic case notes, not trials. A cough that lasts more than three weeks needs a doctor. Ovary pain in women: Some homeopathic texts list a dull left-sided ovary pain. This use rests on old provings, which were tests on healthy people in the 1800s. No modern human trials back it, and new pelvic pain should be checked by a doctor.

Where it comes from:

Silver has a long past in medicine, mostly used on wounds and skin.

Who should avoid Argentum metallicum?

  • Do not use if you have a serious or fast-moving illness and are thinking of taking this in place of proven care.
  • Do not use if you are also taking colloidal silver, silver drops, or silver wound cream, as that adds real silver to your body.
  • Do not use if you already have argyria, a lasting blue-grey staining of the skin caused by silver.
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease and the label shows a low strength such as 3X or 6X, which may hold traces of real silver.
  • Do not use if you have ever had a rash or itch from silver, including silver jewellery.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor says it is fine, because safety has not been studied.
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby or a young child without a doctor's advice.
  • Do not use if you cannot handle milk sugar (lactose), since most pills are made with it.
  • Do not use if you avoid alcohol and only the liquid drops are on offer, as the drops are made with alcohol.
  • Do not use if you take penicillamine, a drug that pulls metals out of the body, without asking your doctor.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your voice is still hoarse after three weeks. A long-lasting hoarse voice can be a sign of something that needs checking.

Also book a visit if a cough lasts more than three weeks, or if a joint is hot, red, and swollen. New or growing pelvic pain needs a check too.

Get help the same day if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, a high fever with a sore throat, blood in your cough, or skin that is turning blue-grey.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
