Oenanthe crocata

Recognised but minor in homeopathy; no human trials support it, and 30C pills hold no plant matter.

Home

What is Oenanthe crocata? Oenanthe crocata is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from hemlock water dropwort, a plant of wet ditches and stream banks. Homeopaths have used it for fits (seizures) and for muscle spasms. The raw plant is one of the most poisonous plants in Europe. Its roots have killed people who ate them by mistake. Only the diluted homeopathic form is ever taken as a remedy. The remedy is made by diluting the plant again and again. At 30C, no plant matter is left in the pill. Trials do not show that such pills work better than a placebo (a dummy pill), and long use in a tradition is not proof that a thing works. How does Oenanthe crocata work? There is no known way for this remedy to act on the body. Homeopathy holds that water keeps a trace of what was once in it. That idea has no support from chemistry or biology. Homeopaths also follow a rule they call "like cures like". The raw plant causes fits, so they give the diluted plant for fits. This is a rule of the tradition, not a proven effect. Any benefit people report is best explained by time, care and placebo effect. What forms does Oenanthe crocata come in? You will usually meet it as small sugar pills or pellets. Liquid dilutions in water and alcohol are also sold. Common strengths are 6C, 30C and 200C. The pills are most often made with lactose (milk sugar) or sucrose (cane sugar). The liquid form usually holds alcohol. A mother tincture (the raw plant extract) also exists. It is a poison, not a home remedy, and should never be taken. Where it comes from: Homeopaths in Europe began using this plant in the 1800s. It came into the materia medica through provings, where healthy people took doses and wrote down what they felt. It has always been a small, rarely used remedy. It was mostly given for fits and for lockjaw. It is not a staple of the tradition.

Helps

What does Oenanthe crocata help with? Seizures (fits), in traditional homeopathic use: This is the main use in old homeopathic texts, and the evidence for it is absent. No human trial has tested this remedy for fits. Seizures need proper medical care. Never use this remedy in place of a prescribed seizure medicine. Muscle spasms and cramping: Homeopaths have given it for sudden, gripping muscle spasms. This comes from provings, not from trials. We found no human study on this use. Frequent cramps can point to a health problem, so get them checked. Lockjaw (a locked, stiff jaw): Old texts list a locked or clenched jaw as a key sign for this remedy. A truly locked jaw can be tetanus or a serious infection, and both are emergencies. Go to hospital; do not treat this at home. Twitching of the face: Provings recorded twitching around the eyes and mouth. That is a record of what the poison did, not proof that the dilution helps. No trial evidence exists. New or lasting twitching should be seen by a doctor. Vertigo (a spinning feeling): A spinning or reeling feeling was noted in provings, so homeopaths sometimes match the remedy to it. There is no study support. Sudden vertigo with slurred speech or weakness needs urgent care.

Where it comes from:

Homeopaths in Europe began using this plant in the 1800s. It came into the materia medica through provings, where healthy people took doses and wrote down what they felt.

It has always been a small, rarely used remedy. It was mostly given for fits and for lockjaw. It is not a staple of the tradition.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Oenanthe crocata need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Oenanthe crocata?

  • Do not use if you have epilepsy (a condition that causes fits) and are thinking of stopping or cutting your prescribed medicine.
  • Do not use if you or your child is having a fit right now: call your emergency number instead.
  • Do not use if you are offered the mother tincture or a very low dilution such as 1X or 3X; these can hold real poison.
  • Do not use if you have found the plant growing wild: never eat, chew or juice any part of it, as a small piece of root can kill.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as the safety of this plant in any form has not been studied.
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby or young child in place of seeing a doctor.
  • Do not use if you have a locked jaw, a head injury or a first-ever fit; these need a hospital, not a remedy.
  • Do not use if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar) and the pills are made on a lactose base.
  • Do not use if you avoid alcohol for health, recovery or faith reasons, and only liquid drops are on offer.

When should you see a doctor?

Call your emergency number at once if someone has a fit that lasts more than five minutes, or one fit after another. Do the same if you think anyone has eaten this plant. Signs of poisoning include vomiting, heavy sweating, a wide-eyed stare, jerking limbs and loss of consciousness.

See a doctor soon for a first fit, a new twitch that will not settle, a jaw that will not open, or cramps that keep coming back. Speak to your doctor before you change the dose of any seizure medicine.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
