Li Zhi He

A long-standing staple of Chinese herbal practice, but human trial evidence is insufficient; findings so far come from lab and animal work only.

What is Li Zhi He? Li Zhi He is the dried seed of the lychee fruit. It is a single herb used in Chinese medicine, not a blend. Its main job in that system is to ease pain low in the belly and groin. Herbalists pick it when the pain feels cold, dull and dragging. Old texts point it at swollen or sore testicles, hernia pain and period cramps. It is nearly always cooked with other herbs rather than taken alone. The research side is thin. Most of what we know comes from lab dishes and animal tests, not people. Long use in a tradition is not proof that a herb works, and that gap applies here. How does Li Zhi He work? No one has shown how Li Zhi He works in the human body. Any account of it is a best guess. In Chinese medicine terms, the seed is said to move stuck qi (the body's flow of energy), warm cold in the lower belly, and break up hard swellings. That is a way of sorting symptoms, not a lab finding. Lab and animal work points at a few plant chemicals that may lower blood sugar and calm swelling. Those tests used doses and methods that do not map neatly onto a cup of herb tea. Treat the mechanism as unproven. What forms does Li Zhi He come in? You will mostly meet it as dried seed, crushed or sliced, sold by weight in Chinese pharmacies. Common forms: Raw dried seed, cracked and simmered into a decoction (a strong herb tea). Salt-fried seed, a prepared form some practitioners prefer for groin pain. Ground powder, taken by the spoonful or pressed into pills. A part of ready-made patent pills and granules, mixed with other herbs. Alcohol or water extracts sold as supplements, usually without a stated strength. Where it comes from: Lychee trees have grown in southern China for more than two thousand years. People ate the fruit and kept the hard seed for medicine. Li Zhi He is named in Chinese herb books from about a thousand years ago. Writers placed it with herbs that move stuck qi and warm the lower belly. It has stayed a small but steady part of formulas for groin pain and period pain ever since.

Helps

What does Li Zhi He help with? Groin and hernia pain: This is the classic use. Chinese formulas pair the seed with fennel and other warming herbs for a dragging ache in the groin. There is no human trial showing it helps, and a hernia (a bulge where tissue pushes through a weak spot in the belly wall) needs a doctor's opinion, not a herb. Testicular pain and swelling: Old texts name this use often, and it is still taught today. Evidence is tradition only. Sudden, severe testicle pain can be a surgical emergency, so it must be checked the same day. Period pain: Used in formulas for cramps that feel cold and better with a heat pack. No good human trial has tested lychee seed on its own for period pain. Any benefit reported in practice may come from the other herbs in the mix. Lower belly pain and bloating: Traditional use covers a full, achy, bloated feeling low in the belly. Evidence is limited to that tradition. Ongoing belly pain deserves a proper diagnosis first. Blood sugar control: Lab and animal studies suggest lychee seed extract can lower blood sugar and affect how the body responds to insulin. This has not been shown to help people in trials we can identify. Do not use it as a substitute for diabetes medicine, and watch for low blood sugar if you take both.

Common forms:

Raw dried seed, cracked and simmered into a decoction (a strong herb tea).

Where it comes from:

Lychee trees have grown in southern China for more than two thousand years.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Li Zhi He need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Li Zhi He?

  • Do not use if you take insulin or any other diabetes medicine, unless your prescriber has agreed and you are checking your blood sugar.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, as safety in pregnancy has not been studied.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if you are buying it for a child, especially a child who is underweight or eating poorly; the chemicals in lychee seed can drop blood sugar and have been linked to seizures (fits) in children.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to lychee or to other fruits in the soapberry family.
  • Do not use if you have surgery booked in the next two weeks.
  • Do not use if you have hypoglycaemia (blood sugar that already runs too low) or you often skip meals.
  • Do not use if you have a hernia or testicle pain that has not been examined by a doctor.

When should you see a doctor?

Get emergency help straight away if you or someone taking it becomes confused, faints, or has a fit. These can be signs of blood sugar dropping dangerously low. Sugary drink or food helps while you wait for help.

Go to hospital the same day for sudden severe testicle pain, a groin bulge that turns hard or painful, or belly pain with vomiting. These can be surgical emergencies.

See your doctor if you get a rash, swelling or breathing trouble after taking it, or if your pain has not improved after four weeks.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
