This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!

Karela, or Bitter Melon, is a tropical fruit from the plant Momordica charantia, grown widely across South Asia, East Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. It has one of the longest track records of any plant medicine for managing blood sugar, appearing in Ayurvedic, Traditional Chinese, and Caribbean folk healing systems for thousands of years. The whole fruit — including flesh, seeds, and juice — contains a unique combination of compounds that mimic and support the body's own insulin system.
Bitter Melon works through several overlapping pathways to help the body handle blood sugar more effectively. Its key compounds — charantin, polypeptide-p, and vicine — help move glucose into cells, reduce glucose absorption in the gut, and improve how cells respond to insulin. It also activates an enzyme called AMPK, the same energy-sensing switch that the diabetes drug metformin targets, which helps muscles and the liver manage blood sugar more efficiently.
Fresh juice is the most traditional form and contains the broadest spectrum of active compounds. Dried powder and capsules offer convenience and more predictable dosing. Standardized extracts (often standardized to charantin content) are the most studied form in clinical trials. Tea or decoction is common in Caribbean and African traditional use. Fresh juice and extracts are generally considered more potent than capsules made from dried whole fruit.
Bitter Melon has been used medicinally for over 2,000 years. In Ayurveda it is called 'Karavella' and is classified as a cooling, bitter herb used to purify the blood and manage 'prameha' (a category that closely maps to diabetes). In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is used to clear heat and support digestion. Caribbean and West African healers have long used 'cerasee' tea from bitter melon leaves and fruit for fevers, skin conditions, and blood sugar. Its reputation as a natural blood sugar herb long predates modern pharmacology.
What it is typically used for, usual dose, cautions, and the study behind it where real trial data exists.
