Track Hwangnyeon with reminders and record whether it helped, in the app.
Hwangnyeon is the dried root of the goldthread plant. In Latin it is Coptis japonica or Coptis chinensis. It is also called Coptis rhizome or goldthread, and it is a single herb, not a blend.
The root is bright yellow and very bitter. Korean healers have used it for loose stools, gut bugs, mouth sores, and red sore eyes. It is also used on hot, red skin rashes.
The proof is thin. The root has a very long record of use, but few human trials test the root itself. A long history of use is not proof that a herb works, and that gap applies to everything on this page.
Most of what we know comes from lab dishes and animals, not people.
The main yellow compound is berberine. In lab tests, berberine slows the growth of some bacteria, fungi and parasites. It also seems to calm swelling and redness in cells, which may explain the old use for gut and skin problems.
In animal work, berberine changes how the body handles sugar and fat. Some of it is thought to act on gut bacteria and on the gut wall itself, since very little of it gets into the blood. Whether the whole root does any of this in a person is not settled.
You will most often meet it as dried sliced root, sold loose for boiling.
Common forms: - Dried root slices, boiled into a decoction (a strong tea made by simmering) - Powder, loose or in capsules - Tinctures (alcohol extracts) - Herbal pills and granules made by a pharmacy - Part of classic Korean formulas such as Hwangnyeon-haedok-tang - Purified berberine tablets, sold as a stand-alone supplement
Purified berberine is not the same product as the whole root. Most human research used the purified form.
Hwangnyeon is one of the old, well-known herbs of East Asia.
It appears in the earliest Chinese herbal writings, around 2,000 years ago, and moved into Korean and Japanese practice from there. Korean doctors listed it in the Donguibogam, a major medical text finished in 1613.
In Korean medicine it is classed as a cold, bitter herb used to clear what old texts called heat and damp. In plain terms, that meant hot red rashes, sore eyes, mouth ulcers and watery, burning diarrhea.
See a doctor if your diarrhea lasts more than two days, or you see blood in your stool, or you have a fever.
Get medical help the same day if your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow, if you feel very dizzy or faint, or if you bruise or bleed more easily than usual.
If you take diabetes medicine and feel shaky, sweaty or confused, check your blood sugar and get help. Anyone caring for a baby who has been given this herb should seek care straight away.
Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
