Hai Ge Ke

A long-standing staple of Chinese medicine, but no human trials support its use; evidence remains insufficient.

What is Hai Ge Ke? Hai Ge Ke is the ground shell of sea clams. It is a single herb, not a blend. In English it is called Clam Shell. In Chinese medicine it is used for coughs with thick, sticky yellow phlegm. It is also used for sour stomach and heartburn. Old texts list it for lumps in the neck. Here is the short verdict. It has long, steady use in one tradition. But human trials are missing, and long use is not proof that it works. How does Hai Ge Ke work? Most of the shell is chalk, also called calcium carbonate. Chalk soaks up stomach acid. That is plain chemistry, and it is the clearest thing we can say about it. Chinese medicine gives it a different job. It is said to clear heat and thin thick phlegm. That idea comes from tradition, and no trial has tested it in people. Claims about lumps and swellings should be read as untested. What forms does Hai Ge Ke come in? It comes as a grey-white powder made from crushed shell. Some sellers calcine it, which means they heat it in a fire until it turns brittle. The calcined form is used more often for sour stomach. You will most often meet it inside a mixed herbal formula. A practitioner may also give it as loose powder, or as pieces to boil in water. Single-herb capsules are not common in the West. Where it comes from: Clam shell shows up in Chinese medical texts by about the 5th century CE. It has been in steady use since then. It is a well-known item in Chinese materia medica (the list of herbs a tradition uses). It is not part of Ayurveda or Western herbal practice. Its standing rests on one tradition.

Helps

What does Hai Ge Ke help with? Cough with thick yellow phlegm: This is the main traditional use. Chinese medicine calls the pattern phlegm-heat, and clam shell is said to soften and clear it. No human trial has tested clam shell for cough. Treat this as tradition, not proof. Heartburn and sour stomach: This use has the most plausible basis. The shell is mostly chalk, and chalk neutralises acid the way an antacid tablet does. No trial has tested clam shell itself for heartburn. Plain antacids from a pharmacy are tested, measured and cheaper. Lumps and swellings in the neck (traditional use only): Classical texts pair it with other herbs for hard lumps and swollen neck glands. This is old practice, not a tested treatment. A new or growing lump in the neck needs a doctor. Do not treat one at home. Hot, painful swelling of the skin (traditional use only): Some texts use the powder on the skin for burns, sores and weeping rashes. Evidence for this is limited to tradition and a little lab work. Do not put it on deep or dirty wounds.

  • Do not take it within two to four hours of any medicine you swallow, especially antibiotics, thyroid tablets, iron or bone drugs.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as the safety of shell powder has not been studied in pregnancy.
  • Do not give it to children unless a qualified practitioner directs it.
  • Never use it in place of treatment for pneumonia, asthma, a stomach ulcer or a lump you have found.
  • Do not buy it from a seller who cannot confirm testing for heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if a cough lasts more than three weeks, or if you cough up blood.

Get medical help the same day if you have chest pain, trouble breathing, a high fever, or you are losing weight without trying.

See a doctor about heartburn that keeps coming back, pain on swallowing, vomiting blood, or black tarry stools.

Also get checked if you feel very thirsty, tired, confused or sick to your stomach while taking it. Those can be signs of too much calcium in the blood.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
