What is Habb-e-Shifa (Unani)? Habb-e-Shifa is a time-honored Unani compound formulation — literally meaning 'Pill of Healing' — that has been used across the Islamic and South Asian medical traditions for centuries. It combines several warming, carminative, and immunomodulatory herbs, most notably black seed (Nigella sativa), into a small pill or bolus taken daily as a general tonic. The formula appears in classical Unani texts and is still manufactured by registered Unani pharmaceutical companies across Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. How does Habb-e-Shifa (Unani) work? The formula works on multiple pathways at once: black seed provides thymoquinone, a potent anti-inflammatory and immune-supporting compound; dried ginger and long pepper are warming digestive stimulants that improve gastric motility and reduce gas; and Terminalia chebula is a mild laxative and antioxidant. Together, these herbs address what Unani medicine calls 'Sue mizaj barid ratab' — a cold, sluggish constitution — by generating warmth, clearing mucus, and restoring digestive fire. What forms does Habb-e-Shifa (Unani) come in? Habb-e-Shifa is most traditionally found as small round pills or boluses — typically 250–500 mg each — sold in bottles of 60–120 tablets. Some formularies also describe a powder form (sufoof) that can be mixed with warm water or honey. The pill form is standard in commercial Unani pharmacies. Where it comes from: The name and concept of 'Habb-e-Shifa' is deeply rooted in the Greco-Arabic medical tradition established by Ibn Sina (Avicenna) in the 11th century and later codified in South Asian Unani practice. Nigella sativa, the key ingredient, is referenced in the Hadith as 'a cure for every disease except death,' underscoring its sacred and medicinal significance in Islamic medicine for over 1,400 years . The compound formula as a daily preventive tonic became standard in Unani hakeem practice across the Mughal-era Indian subcontinent.

Helps

What does Habb-e-Shifa (Unani) help with? Sluggish digestion and bloating: The warming spices in this formula — ginger, long pepper, and black seed — stimulate the production of digestive enzymes and bile, helping break down food more efficiently. This reduces bloating, gas, and that heavy feeling after meals. Recurring colds, coughs, and congestion: Black seed and long pepper both have properties that help open airways, thin mucus, and fight off respiratory infections. Regular use is traditionally recommended through winter months to reduce how often colds take hold. Low immunity and frequent illness: Black seed (Nigella sativa) is the immune backbone of this formula — it helps the immune system respond more effectively without over-reacting. Honey and Terminalia chebula add additional antioxidant and antimicrobial support. Joint pain and stiffness: The anti-inflammatory compounds in black seed and ginger work together to ease swelling and discomfort in joints. This is a traditional use of the formula for people with cold, damp-type joint complaints. Fatigue and low energy: Unani tradition uses Habb-e-Shifa as a general tonic for people who feel run-down, cold, or depleted. The warming herbs are believed to restore vitality by improving nutrient absorption and circulation. Asthma and bronchial tightness: Long pepper (piperine) has a mild bronchodilatory effect, and black seed has been studied for improving breathing in asthmatic patients. The combination is traditionally used to ease wheezing and chest tightness. Constipation (mild): Terminalia chebula is a gentle stimulant laxative that encourages regular bowel movements without causing dependency. It also soothes the gut lining, making it helpful for people with sluggish, irregular digestion. Metabolic sluggishness and weight support: Ginger and black seed both have modest effects on metabolism and blood sugar regulation, which is why this formula is sometimes used as part of a broader approach to managing weight and energy balance.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
