What is Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry)? Gou Qi Zi — known in the West as goji berry — is the ripe, dried fruit of Lycium barbarum, a shrub native to northwest China and widely cultivated across Asia. It has been a cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine for at least 2,000 years , classically used to nourish the liver and kidneys, brighten the eyes, and strengthen the body against the effects of aging. Today it is recognized globally as a nutritional powerhouse with a rich profile of antioxidants, carotenoids, and unique polysaccharides not found in most other fruits. How does Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry) work? The primary active compounds are Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs), which support immune regulation, protect nerve cells, and help reduce oxidative stress throughout the body. The high zeaxanthin content makes goji particularly effective at protecting the eyes by filtering damaging blue light and supporting the macula. Together, these compounds reduce chronic inflammation, support the liver's detoxification processes, and promote cellular health in ways that align with goji's traditional reputation as a longevity tonic. What forms does Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry) come in? Dried berries are the most traditional and widely available form — they can be eaten as a snack, added to teas, oatmeal, or soups. Standardized capsule or tablet extracts (typically standardized to LBP content) offer a consistent dose and are convenient for therapeutic use. Juices and liquid extracts are popular but vary widely in potency. Powder form blends easily into smoothies. For eye and longevity benefits, standardized extracts or consistent daily consumption of dried berries are preferable to highly processed juice drinks. Where it comes from: Gou Qi Zi appears in the Shennong Bencao Jing — the foundational Chinese materia medica compiled around 200 CE — ranked as a superior tonic herb for prolonging life and brightening the eyes. It has been prescribed continuously in Chinese and Tibetan medicine for over two millennia. Villages in the Ningxia region of China, where goji grows most prolifically, have long claimed unusually high rates of centenarians, a connection that inspired early modern research interest in the berry's longevity properties.

Helps

What does Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry) help with? Eye health and macular protection: Goji is exceptionally rich in zeaxanthin, the carotenoid that concentrates in the macula and acts like internal sunglasses for your eyes. Regular consumption helps protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and may slow the progression of existing early-stage changes in the retina. Immune system support: The LBPs in goji help activate and balance key immune cells — including natural killer cells and lymphocytes — that are your body's first line of defense. Studies in older adults show that daily goji consumption can meaningfully boost immune markers that typically decline with age. Fatigue and low energy: People who drink goji juice daily report better energy levels, improved athletic stamina, and reduced feelings of tiredness compared to placebo. The berry's combination of antioxidants, B vitamins, and iron supports sustained energy production without stimulants. Healthy aging and longevity: Goji's antioxidant compounds help neutralize the oxidative damage that accumulates with age and drives chronic disease. LBPs have shown the ability to protect cells — including neurons — from stress-related damage, supporting the berry's ancient reputation as a longevity tonic. Liver health: Betaine and several antioxidant compounds in goji support liver cell protection and help regulate fat metabolism in the liver. Traditional use for liver nourishment has some backing from modern research showing reduced markers of liver stress with goji supplementation. Blood sugar balance: Goji polysaccharides appear to help improve insulin sensitivity and reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes. Some clinical evidence in people with type 2 diabetes shows modest improvements in fasting glucose and hemoglobin A1c with regular goji supplementation. Skin health and UV protection: The high levels of beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, and Vitamin C support skin elasticity and help protect skin cells from UV-related oxidative damage. Some early research suggests goji may help reduce the depth of fine lines and improve skin tone with regular use. Sleep quality: Traditional Chinese Medicine has long used goji to calm the mind and improve sleep. Some clinical trials show improvements in sleep quality, reduced nighttime awakening, and better morning energy in adults taking goji juice, possibly linked to its antioxidant and mild adaptogenic effects. Male fertility and reproductive health: Goji has a centuries-long reputation in TCM as a kidney tonic that supports male vitality. Emerging research suggests LBPs may help protect sperm from oxidative damage, and some studies show improvements in sperm count and motility with supplementation. Anxiety and mood support: Participants in a clinical trial using a standardized goji juice reported reduced feelings of anxiety, greater sense of well-being, and improved mental focus after two weeks. These effects are likely tied to goji's antioxidant activity and its support of healthy stress-response pathways.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
