What is Gokshura (Tribulus TCM)? Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) is a flowering plant native to warm temperate and tropical regions worldwide, with deep roots in both Ayurvedic medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is known as Bai Ji Li. In Ayurveda it is considered a premier rasayana herb — a rejuvenating tonic — especially prized for its support of the kidneys, urinary tract, and reproductive system. In TCM it is primarily used to calm the liver, brighten the eyes, and anchor excess yang energy. How does Gokshura (Tribulus TCM) work? The primary active compounds are steroidal saponins, especially protodioscin, which are thought to support the body's natural hormone environment by encouraging luteinizing hormone (LH) release, though this effect is modest and context-dependent. Its flavonoids and alkaloids have demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and its diuretic action helps flush the urinary tract gently. The TCM application focuses more on liver-calming and anti-inflammatory effects, which map reasonably well onto its known anti-oxidant and mild blood-pressure-lowering actions. What forms does Gokshura (Tribulus TCM) come in? Standardized capsule and tablet extracts (standardized to saponin content) offer the most consistent dosing and are preferred for clinical outcomes. Traditional Ayurvedic powder (churna) and decoctions allow whole-herb synergy and are still widely used. Tinctures are available but less common for this herb. For urinary and kidney goals, traditional decoctions remain popular and practical. Where it comes from: Gokshura has been documented in the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita — the foundational texts of Ayurveda — as a cornerstone herb for kidney stones, dysuria, and male reproductive vitality. In TCM's Materia Medica it appears under Bai Ji Li for liver wind, eye disorders, and skin conditions. It gained international attention in the 1990s when Eastern European athletes claimed it as a natural performance booster, sparking decades of modern research.

Helps

What does Gokshura (Tribulus TCM) help with? Kidney stones and urinary discomfort: This is Gokshura's strongest and longest-validated traditional use. It acts as a gentle diuretic and antispasmodic, helping to relax the urinary tract and encourage the flushing of small stones and crystals. Multiple clinical studies in India have found it reduces recurrence of calcium oxalate stones and relieves symptoms of urinary tract irritation. Low libido (men and women): Tribulus has been studied for its ability to support sexual desire in both sexes, with more consistent results in women with low desire and men with documented hormonal decline. Its saponins appear to work partly through mild LH stimulation and partly through direct effects on genital blood flow and nerve sensitivity. Erectile dysfunction: Several small clinical trials have shown improvements in erectile function scores in men taking Tribulus, particularly when combined with low-normal testosterone levels. The effect is thought to involve improved androgen sensitivity and nitric oxide pathways that support healthy blood flow. High blood pressure (mild): Human studies and traditional use both point to a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect, likely through diuretic action and the vasodilatory properties of its saponin and flavonoid content. It is not a replacement for pharmaceutical treatment but may support healthy pressure as part of a broader lifestyle approach. High cholesterol: Some clinical data suggest Tribulus can modestly reduce LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while supporting HDL levels. The mechanism likely involves saponins interfering with intestinal cholesterol absorption, similar to the action seen with other plant saponins. Female sexual dysfunction: This is one of the areas with the strongest modern evidence. Standardized Tribulus extract has shown meaningful improvements in desire, arousal, and satisfaction in women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder across multiple randomized trials, with a generally favorable safety profile. Hormonal imbalance (men): Tribulus may help men in the low-normal testosterone range by gently nudging LH output, which signals the testes to produce more testosterone. Effects are modest and most pronounced in men who are genuinely deficient rather than those with already-healthy hormone levels. Liver support and eye health (TCM use): In TCM, Bai Ji Li is prescribed to calm liver wind and brighten the eyes — patterns that correspond in modern terms to reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver and eye tissues. While direct clinical evidence for these specific TCM indications is limited, the antioxidant profile of the herb provides a plausible basis. Skin conditions (eczema, itching — TCM use): TCM practitioners use Bai Ji Li topically and internally for wind-heat skin conditions including eczema, hives, and itching. Its anti-inflammatory and antihistamine-like flavonoid activity offers a reasonable mechanism, though dedicated clinical trials for this indication are lacking.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
