Gambogia

Recognised but minor traditional use in homeopathy; human trial evidence is absent, and dilutions this high cannot be told apart from placebo.

Home

What is Gambogia? Gambogia is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from gamboge, the dried yellow sap of the Garcinia morella tree. Homeopaths have used it mainly for sudden watery diarrhoea with loud gurgling in the belly. The sap is diluted again and again in water and alcohol. At 30C, a very common strength, no measurable source material is left. What you take is the water, alcohol or sugar pellet that carried the dilution. Trials do not show that homeopathic remedies work better than placebo (a dummy pill with no active drug). Long use inside a tradition is not proof that something works. This point is made here once and is not repeated below. How does Gambogia work? Homeopathy rests on the idea of "like cures like". Raw gamboge causes violent diarrhoea, so homeopaths give a very dilute form to people who have watery diarrhoea. There is no known way a dilution this high could act on the body. At 30C there is no source material left to act. Tests cannot tell the remedy apart from a dummy pill. Any change you notice may come from time, rest, fluids, care or your own hopes for the remedy. What forms does Gambogia come in? Gambogia is sold as sugar pellets, tablets, or liquid drops in alcohol and water. Common strengths are 6C, 12C and 30C. Some sellers offer 3X or 6X, which are weaker dilutions and closer to the raw resin. The mother tincture (the first alcohol extract, before dilution) is not a consumer product and should not be taken. Where it comes from: Gamboge comes from trees in India, Sri Lanka and parts of Southeast Asia. It was long used as a strong purgative (a medicine that forces the bowels to empty) and as a bright paint pigment. Homeopaths added it to their remedy lists in the 1800s. Writers such as Clarke and Allen described it for gushing, watery stools. It has stayed a minor remedy. It is far less used than staples like Arsenicum album or Nux vomica.

Helps

What does Gambogia help with? Sudden watery diarrhoea: This is the classic homeopathic picture for Gambogia: a stool that comes out all at once, then relief. The link comes from old case notes, not from testing. No human trial has tested Gambogia for diarrhoea. Watery diarrhoea mainly needs fluids and salts, and a doctor if it does not settle. Belly gurgling and cramping before a stool: Homeopathic texts describe loud rumbling and griping pain that eases once the stool passes. This description comes from the effects of raw gamboge on the gut. There is no trial evidence that the dilute remedy changes these symptoms. Burning around the back passage after a stool: Old materia medica notes list soreness and burning at the back passage. Nothing has been tested in people. Simple care, such as gentle washing and a barrier cream, has better support. Loose stools in hot weather: Some homeopathic writers linked Gambogia to summer diarrhoea. This is a traditional pattern only. Food and water hygiene, plus fluids, are what the medical evidence supports. Urge to pass a stool straight after eating: This urge appears in the traditional symptom picture for the remedy. If it is new, lasting, or comes with weight loss or blood, it needs a medical check rather than a home remedy.

Where it comes from:

Gamboge comes from trees in India, Sri Lanka and parts of Southeast Asia.

Who should avoid Gambogia?

  • Do not use if you are tempted to swallow raw gamboge resin or the mother tincture (the first alcohol extract) in any amount — the raw resin is a poison that can cause violent diarrhoea, vomiting and collapse
  • Do not use if you are treating a baby, a young child, an older adult or a frail person with diarrhoea instead of getting medical care — losing fluid fast can be dangerous for them
  • Do not use if you have blood in your stool, black tarry stools, a high fever, severe belly pain or diarrhoea lasting more than two days
  • Do not use if you have signs of dehydration (too little fluid in the body), such as very dark urine, dizziness, a dry mouth or passing almost no urine — get medical help instead
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor or midwife has said it is fine
  • Do not use if you have inflammatory bowel disease (a long-term illness that inflames the gut) and your symptoms are flaring — see your specialist
  • Do not use if you plan to stop, lower or replace a prescribed medicine in order to take it
  • Do not use if you must avoid alcohol, including when you take disulfiram or metronidazole, unless you pick the sugar pellets rather than the liquid drops
  • Do not use if you have diabetes and cannot account for the sugar in the pellets

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor the same day if diarrhoea is heavy, if you cannot keep fluids down, or if you feel dizzy, weak or confused. Get help straight away for a baby, a young child, an older adult or anyone with a long-term illness. Also see a doctor if you notice blood or black colour in your stool, a fever above 39C, severe belly pain, diarrhoea that lasts more than two days, or any loose stools that keep coming back over weeks. If someone has swallowed raw gamboge resin, treat it as poisoning and call your poison centre or emergency number at once.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
