Crotalus cascavella

Recognised traditional use within homeopathy since the 1800s; human trial evidence does not separate it from placebo.

What is Crotalus cascavella? Crotalus cascavella is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from snake venom. The snake is the Brazilian rattlesnake, Crotalus durissus terrificus. Homeopaths give it for throbbing head pain and a racing heart. Some also give it for a strong fear of being alone. They pick it when symptoms feel worse at night. The venom is watered down again and again. At the usual 30C strength, no venom is left. Trials do not show it beats a dummy pill (placebo), and long use in homeopathy is not proof that a remedy works. How does Crotalus cascavella work? The honest answer is that no one has shown how this remedy could work. Homeopathy rests on an idea called like cures like. A thing that causes symptoms in a well person is said to ease the same symptoms in a sick person. Raw rattlesnake venom causes bleeding, shock and heart strain, so homeopaths match it to those symptoms. The venom is then diluted, one part in a hundred, over and over. At 30C that step has been done thirty times. Past about 12C, not one molecule of the starting venom is likely to be left. Some homeopaths say the water keeps a memory of the venom. Chemists and physicists have looked and have not found one. Any change people notice is best explained by placebo, care, rest and time. What forms does Crotalus cascavella come in? You will most often see tiny sugar pellets or liquid drops. Common strengths are 6C, 30C and 200C. The C stands for one dilution step of 1 in 100. A higher number means more steps and even less starting material. LM and Q strengths are sold too. Low strengths such as 3X or 6X may still hold traces of real venom. Buy only from a maker that follows pharmacy standards. Where it comes from: This remedy has a small but long-standing place in homeopathy. Homeopaths in Brazil tested the venom on healthy people in the 1800s. They wrote down every symptom the testers reported. Those notes became the remedy picture that homeopaths still read today. It sits beside other snake remedies, such as Lachesis and Crotalus horridus. It has never been a front-line choice. Most homeopaths reach for it rarely.

Helps

What does Crotalus cascavella help with? Throbbing head pain and migraine-type headaches: This is one of the main reasons homeopaths pick the remedy. The old notes describe a pounding head, worse from heat and worse after sleep. No human trial has tested the remedy for headache. Palpitations (a fluttering or racing heartbeat): The remedy picture includes a heart that pounds or skips. Homeopaths link this to the way raw venom strains the heart. There is no trial proof, and a new or lasting racing heart needs a doctor. Fear of being alone, and dread at night: Homeopaths use the remedy for people who feel afraid at night and want company. This comes from the 1800s testing notes, not from research. No trial supports it for anxiety. Easy bruising and nosebleeds: Raw venom causes bleeding, so homeopaths match the remedy to bleeding problems. A 30C pill holds no venom and cannot be expected to change clotting. Easy bruising and repeat nosebleeds should be checked by a doctor. Symptoms that feel worse on the left side or after sleep: Homeopaths choose remedies by patterns like this one, not by disease name. It is a matching rule from tradition. It has not been tested in people.

Where it comes from:

This remedy has a small but long-standing place in homeopathy.

Who should avoid Crotalus cascavella?

  • Do not use if you are having an emergency such as chest pain, signs of a stroke, heavy bleeding or a snakebite — call emergency services instead
  • Do not use if you would be swapping it for a treatment your doctor has prescribed
  • Do not use if you have been offered raw or barely diluted snake venom, which is a poison and must never be swallowed
  • Do not use if you take a blood thinner (a drug that stops clots) and the strength is below 4C
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor agrees
  • Do not use if you are treating a baby or young child without a doctor's advice
  • Do not use if you avoid alcohol, or take disulfiram (a drug used to help stop drinking) or metronidazole (an antibiotic), and the product is liquid drops
  • Do not use if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar) and the pellets are made with it
  • Do not use if you have a weak immune system, for example after a transplant or during chemotherapy, without asking your doctor first

When should you see a doctor?

Call emergency services now if you have chest pain, trouble breathing, a face or arm that droops, slurred speech, or bleeding you cannot stop.

See a doctor soon if your headaches are new, worse or very sudden. Do the same for a heart that races often, for easy bruising, or for nosebleeds that keep coming back.

Stop the remedy and speak to a doctor if a rash, swelling or stomach upset starts after you take it.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
