What is Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillaria)? Chuan Bei Mu is the dried bulb of Fritillaria cirrhosa, a small alpine plant native to Sichuan, Yunnan, and Tibet. It is one of the most prized respiratory herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), classified as sweet, bitter, and cooling in nature. It differs from its close relative Zhe Bei Mu (Fritillaria thunbergii) in that it is considered gentler and better suited for dry, deficient-type coughs rather than thick, productive phlegm. How does Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillaria) work? The herb works primarily through its steroidal alkaloids — especially peiminine and verticinone — which help relax the smooth muscle of the airways, making it easier to breathe and reducing the cough reflex. These compounds also appear to thin and loosen mucus, making it easier to clear without harsh irritation. There is also research suggesting anti-inflammatory effects in the airways, which may explain its benefit in chronic conditions like bronchitis and asthma. What forms does Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillaria) come in? Chuan Bei Mu is most traditionally used as a fine powder or in decoctions (simmered teas), often combined with other herbs like Fritillaria (Zhe Bei Mu), Pear (Li), or Lily bulb. Modern formats include capsules, standardized liquid extracts, and prepared syrups. It is also a key ingredient in several classical TCM formulas such as Bei Mu Gua Lou San. When buying standalone supplements, look for products that specify Fritillaria cirrhosa and the alkaloid content. Where it comes from: Chuan Bei Mu has been documented in Chinese medical texts since at least the Han dynasty (around 200 BCE), appearing in the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing, one of the foundational texts of Chinese herbal medicine. It was traditionally distinguished from other Fritillaria species and reserved for cases of prolonged, dry, or heat-type coughs — particularly in people who were considered to have deficient lung energy. It remains one of the most frequently prescribed herbs in modern TCM clinical practice for respiratory complaints.

Helps

What does Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillaria) help with? Dry or lingering cough: Chuan Bei Mu is specifically suited to coughs that drag on after an illness or feel dry and scratchy rather than wet and productive. Its alkaloids help calm the cough reflex and gently moisten the airways so the irritation settles faster. Bronchitis (acute and chronic): The herb's anti-inflammatory and airway-relaxing properties make it useful for both short-term bronchial infections and longer-standing bronchitis. It is often combined with other herbs in TCM formulas to reduce airway inflammation and help clear stuck mucus. Asthma and wheezing: Research has looked at Fritillaria alkaloids for their ability to reduce bronchospasm — the tightening of the airways that causes wheezing and shortness of breath. While not a replacement for conventional asthma treatment, it may offer supportive benefit when used alongside standard care. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) support: Some TCM clinical studies using formulas containing Chuan Bei Mu have shown improvements in breathing capacity and reduced flare-ups in COPD patients. The herb is typically used as part of a broader herbal formula rather than alone for this purpose. Phlegm and mucus buildup: Unlike some harsh expectorants, Chuan Bei Mu is considered a gentle mucolytic — it helps thin and loosen phlegm so the body can clear it naturally, without overstimulating the airways. Upper respiratory infections: It is commonly used in TCM during colds and flu to manage the cough and sore throat that come with respiratory infections. Some evidence suggests it may also have mild antimicrobial properties, though this is less well-studied in clinical settings. Throat irritation and hoarseness: The herb's moistening and cooling properties in TCM theory make it a go-to for sore, hoarse throats — especially when caused by dryness, overuse of the voice, or post-infectious irritation. Lung dryness from illness or environment: In dry climates or after prolonged illness, the respiratory tract can become irritated and depleted. Chuan Bei Mu is specifically classified in TCM as a herb that nourishes and restores moisture to lung tissue, making it valuable in recovery settings.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
