What is Camu Camu Berry? Camu camu is a small, cherry-like fruit native to the Amazon rainforest, particularly the flooded riverbanks of Peru and Brazil. It has been used by Indigenous Amazonian communities for generations as a food and traditional medicine. What makes it stand out globally is its extraordinary vitamin C content — one teaspoon of camu camu powder can deliver 700–1,200% of the daily recommended vitamin C intake. How does Camu Camu Berry work? Camu camu works primarily through its dense concentration of vitamin C and polyphenols like anthocyanins and ellagic acid. Vitamin C is essential for collagen production, immune cell function, and neutralizing free radicals throughout the body. The polyphenols add an extra anti-inflammatory and antioxidant punch that goes beyond what isolated vitamin C alone provides — meaning the whole food form may work better than a synthetic supplement. What forms does Camu Camu Berry come in? Freeze-dried powder is the most popular and potent form — it preserves the vitamin C and polyphenols well and mixes easily into smoothies or water. Capsules offer convenience and controlled dosing. Raw juice is available but less stable. Avoid products that have been heat-processed, as vitamin C degrades with heat. Where it comes from: Indigenous peoples of the Amazon have harvested camu camu from flooded forests for centuries, using it both as a food source and as a remedy for colds, infections, and general vitality. It gained international attention in the 1990s and 2000s as researchers began documenting its record-breaking vitamin C levels. Peru now cultivates it commercially as a superfood export.

Helps

What does Camu Camu Berry help with? Weak immune system and frequent colds: Camu camu delivers a massive natural dose of vitamin C, which fuels immune cells and helps the body mount a faster defense against infections. The polyphenols alongside the vitamin C give it an edge over synthetic vitamin C supplements alone. Skin dullness, aging, and collagen loss: Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis — the protein that keeps skin firm, smooth, and youthful. Camu camu's high-dose, whole-food vitamin C may support skin brightness and reduce the appearance of fine lines more effectively than lower-dose supplements. Chronic inflammation: Human studies have shown that camu camu reduces markers of inflammation in the body, including uric acid and oxidative damage markers. The anthocyanins and ellagic acid help calm inflammatory pathways that drive many chronic health conditions. High blood pressure: The anthocyanins and vitamin C in camu camu support blood vessel flexibility and healthy circulation. Some research suggests regular use may modestly lower blood pressure by relaxing the walls of blood vessels and reducing oxidative damage to the cardiovascular system. High blood sugar and insulin resistance: Early human research suggests camu camu may help improve how the body handles blood sugar by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress — two key drivers of insulin resistance. It may also support a healthier gut microbiome, which plays a role in metabolic health. Oxidative stress and free radical damage: Camu camu is one of the most antioxidant-rich foods measured by ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity). Its combination of vitamin C and polyphenols neutralizes free radicals that damage cells and accelerate aging and disease. Low mood and stress: Vitamin C is consumed rapidly during stress and plays a role in the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin. Replenishing it with a food-based source like camu camu may support mood stability and resilience to stress, particularly when deficiency is a factor. Gum and oral health problems: Vitamin C deficiency is a classic cause of gum inflammation, bleeding, and poor healing. Camu camu provides a potent whole-food dose that can help maintain gum integrity and support tissue repair in the mouth. Eye health and vision protection: The antioxidants in camu camu — especially vitamin C and flavonoids — help protect the eyes from oxidative damage linked to cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Vitamin C is one of the few antioxidants found in high concentration in the lens of the eye.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
