Blue Tansy essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from Tanacetum annuum, a flowering herb that grows predominantly along Morocco's Atlantic coast. Its striking deep blue-to-indigo color comes from chamazulene, a compound that forms during the distillation process — not found in the raw plant itself. It is closely related to but distinctly different from common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare), and its safety and chemical profile are much more favorable for cosmetic and aromatic use.

Chamazulene, the oil's signature blue compound, is a potent anti-inflammatory agent that helps calm skin pathways involved in redness, swelling, and allergic-type reactions. Sabinene and beta-pinene contribute antioxidant and mild antimicrobial effects that support overall skin health. In aromatherapy, the oil's light, sweet, herbaceous scent interacts with the olfactory system to promote a sense of calm and ease tension.

Blue Tansy is used almost exclusively as an essential oil for topical or aromatic application. It is most effective when blended into a carrier oil (jojoba, rosehip, or squalane work especially well) at a 1–2% dilution for face use. Many premium facial serums and face oils include it as a featured ingredient. It can also be diffused aromatically for its calming scent. It is not taken orally.

To support the same anti-inflammatory and skin-health pathways it addresses, focus on an anti-inflammatory diet: fatty fish (salmon, sardines) for omega-3s, colorful vegetables and berries for antioxidants, green tea for EGCG, and turmeric for curcumin. Reducing refined sugar and processed oils also helps lower the chronic, low-grade skin inflammation that Blue Tansy targets topically. Adequate hydration supports skin barrier function alongside topical use.
