Bie Jia Jian Wan

Long standing as a named classical formula in Chinese practice; human trial proof is thin and unclear.

Home

What is Bie Jia Jian Wan? Bie Jia Jian Wan is an old Chinese herb pill. The name means turtle shell pill. Turtle shell is the lead herb, mixed with more than twenty others. Long ago it was used for a hard lump felt under the ribs after long fevers. Today it is mostly given in China for a scarred, stiff liver. It is used as an add-on, not in place of proper liver care. This is a multi-herb pill, so it has many ways to clash with drugs. Do not take it while pregnant. Human trial proof is thin, and long use is not proof that it works. How does Bie Jia Jian Wan work? No one has shown how this pill works in the body. In Chinese theory it is said to soften a hard mass and move stuck blood. That is a way of talking about the body. It is not a lab finding. Lab and animal work has looked at the liver. In rats, turtle shell and some of the other herbs seem to slow scar build-up. We do not know if the same thing happens in people. What forms does Bie Jia Jian Wan come in? You will most often see small round pills. Powders, granules, tablets and capsules are also sold. In China it is a named shop medicine. Strength and herb list can change from brand to brand. Read the label of the exact product in your hand. A newer product called compound turtle shell tablets is sold for the liver too. It is not the same mix. Do not swap one for the other. Where it comes from: The recipe comes from the Jin Gui Yao Lue, a Chinese medical text from about 200 CE. It is linked to the doctor Zhang Zhongjing. It was written for a lump under the ribs left behind by long, repeating fevers. Later Chinese writers kept it in their books. In modern China it is used mostly for the liver.

Helps

What does Bie Jia Jian Wan help with? Liver scarring (fibrosis) from long-term hepatitis B: This is the main modern use in China. Some small hospital studies there report better blood test numbers. We could not confirm a clear, well-run trial of this exact pill. Treat the benefit as unproven, and keep taking the drug your doctor gave you for the virus. Early cirrhosis (a badly scarred liver): Some Chinese doctors add this pill to normal care. Any gain is unproven. It cannot undo a scarred liver. You still need a liver doctor and regular tests. Enlarged spleen, or a lump felt under the left ribs: This is a traditional use. We found no human trials for it. A lump or swelling in the belly needs tests to find the cause first. A lump left after long, repeating fevers (the old use): This is the use named in the old text. Those fevers were most likely malaria, a fever spread by mosquitoes. No modern trial backs this up. Malaria needs proper drugs today.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
