Ban Xia Hou Po Tang

A staple Chinese and Kampo formula for nearly 1,800 years, but human trial evidence is small, short and not strong enough to judge whether it beats

What is Ban Xia Hou Po Tang? Ban Xia Hou Po Tang is a classic Chinese herbal formula. People use it for a lump or tight feeling in the throat that comes and goes with stress. It often comes with nausea, a full chest, or a dry cough. In Japan the same formula is called Hangekobokuto. It is also known as Pinellia and Magnolia Bark Decoction. We count it here as one product, though it blends five herbs. Those five herbs are processed Pinellia root (Ban Xia), Magnolia bark (Hou Po), Poria fungus (Fu Ling), fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang) and Perilla leaf (Zi Su Ye). Practitioners pick it when nothing is truly stuck in the throat. There is no physical block behind the feeling. Symptoms rise and fall with mood and tension. On the evidence: this formula has centuries of recorded use. But human trial evidence is thin, and most of it comes from small Japanese studies. Long traditional use is not proof that something works, and that applies to everything on this page. See a doctor before trying any herb if you have trouble swallowing food, are losing weight, or have pain when you swallow. How does Ban Xia Hou Po Tang work? The honest answer is that nobody has shown clearly how this formula works in people. In Chinese tradition, the formula is said to move stuck qi. Qi is the tradition's word for the body's driving force. The formula is also said to break up phlegm gathered in the chest and throat. That is a description inside the tradition's own model. It is not a biological mechanism that anyone has measured. Lab and animal work offers some clues. Magnolia bark compounds calm nerve activity in animals, and ginger cuts nausea signals in the gut. Some animal work suggests the mix affects the swallowing reflex and the movement of the food pipe. None of this has been confirmed as the reason people feel better. A simpler explanation may play a part too. The throat-lump feeling often eases when tension eases. Warm herbal drinks and regular attention to symptoms can do some of that on their own. What forms does Ban Xia Hou Po Tang come in? You will usually meet this formula in one of three forms. - Dried granules or powder from a strong water extract, stirred into hot water, which is the most common form and the one used in Japanese Kampo practice. - A traditional decoction, where a practitioner gives you raw sliced herbs to simmer in water for 20 to 30 minutes . - Pills or capsules of the strong extract, which are easier to carry but harder to adjust. One rule matters more than the form. The Pinellia must be the processed kind, listed as Zhi Ban Xia or prepared Pinellia. Buy from a supplier that says so on the label. Where it comes from: The formula first appears in the Jin Gui Yao Lue (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet). The book is credited to Zhang Zhongjing and dates to roughly 200 CE. That makes this one of the oldest formulas still in everyday use. The original entry describes a woman. She feels as though a piece of roasted meat is stuck in her throat. Later Chinese writers named this pattern mei he qi, or plum-pit qi, and the formula has been tied to it ever since. It crossed into Japanese Kampo medicine. There it is called Hangekobokuto, and it carries an official product number in the national drug listing. It remains a staple prescription in both countries.

Helps

What does Ban Xia Hou Po Tang help with? Globus sensation (a lump-in-the-throat feeling with nothing actually there): This is the formula's classical job. It is the reason the formula is still prescribed. Its traditional standing is strong and goes back nearly 1,800 years . Human trial evidence is weak. A few small Japanese studies report gains. But they are short, small, and not all placebo-controlled. Get your throat properly examined first. A lump feeling can also come from reflux (acid coming back up), thyroid problems, or, rarely, a growth. Nausea and a full, tight feeling in the chest: Ginger is one of the five herbs. It has reasonable evidence of its own for nausea in other settings. Whether the whole formula beats ginger alone has not been tested. Traditional use for this is long-standing. Controlled human evidence for the formula itself is lacking. Anxiety with throat tightness or sighing: Tradition uses it when worry shows up in the body. Signs include a tight throat, sighing, or a blocked chest. Magnolia bark compounds calm animals in lab work. But no good human trial shows this formula treats an anxiety disorder. It is not a substitute for treatment if anxiety is affecting your daily life. Cough with a sticky throat and no clear infection: Tradition uses it for a lingering, phlegmy cough. The cough is tied to chest tightness rather than infection. Evidence here is traditional only. A cough lasting more than three weeks needs a doctor, not an herb. Swallowing difficulty in frail older adults (studied, not proven): Small Japanese studies looked at the swallowing and cough reflexes in older adults. The idea was to cut down on food or drink going down the wrong way. Results were encouraging. But the studies were small and easily biased. This is a promising question, not a settled answer. It belongs under medical supervision.

- A traditional decoction, where a practitioner gives you raw sliced herbs to simmer in water for 20 to 30 minutes. - Pills or capsules of the strong extract, which are easier to carry but harder to adjust.

One rule matters more than the form. The Pinellia must be the processed kind, listed as Zhi Ban Xia or prepared Pinellia. Buy from a supplier that says so on the label.

Where it comes from:

The formula first appears in the Jin Gui Yao Lue (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet).

Who should avoid Ban Xia Hou Po Tang?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant, unless a qualified practitioner is supervising you, because Pinellia is traditionally avoided in pregnancy.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding, as safety for the baby has not been studied.
  • Never take raw, unprocessed Pinellia (Ban Xia). The raw root badly irritates the mouth and throat and must always be processed before use.
  • Do not use if you have trouble swallowing food, pain when swallowing, are coughing up blood, or are losing weight without trying. Get these checked by a doctor first.
  • Do not use if you are taking an aconite-containing herbal formula (Fu Zi, Chuan Wu or Cao Wu) unless an experienced practitioner has prescribed the combination.
  • Do not use if you are about to have surgery. Stop at least two weeks before, because of the ginger's possible effect on blood clotting and the formula's calming effect.
  • Do not give it to a child without advice from a qualified practitioner or doctor.
  • Avoid alcohol, sleeping tablets or opioid painkillers while taking it, because the drowsiness adds up.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery until you know whether it makes you sleepy.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor straight away if your mouth, tongue or throat burns or swells after a dose, if you have trouble breathing, or if you get a widespread rash. These can be signs of badly processed Pinellia or an allergic reaction.

Book a normal appointment if the lump-in-the-throat feeling has not improved after four weeks, if it becomes constant rather than coming and going, or if swallowing food becomes hard or painful.

Also see a doctor if you develop swelling in the ankles, unusual muscle weakness, or a rising blood pressure reading while taking any long-term herbal formula.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist you are taking this formula before starting any new prescription, especially blood thinners, sedatives or painkillers.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
