Badiaga is a homeopathic remedy made from freshwater sponge. Homeopaths have used it for swollen glands, sore bruised muscles, and a stuffy, sneezy nose. It comes as tiny sugar pills or as liquid drops.
The sponge is diluted again and again, with a hard shake at each step. At 30C, the usual strength, not one bit of sponge is left in the pill. Tests in people have not shown these pills to work better than a dummy pill.
Long use in a tradition is not proof that a remedy works. Badiaga has the long use, but not the proof. Use it alongside your doctor's care, never in place of it.
The Latin name is Spongilla fluviatilis, also written Spongilla lacustris. It is a single drug in homeopathy, which means one remedy on its own, not a blend. Many people know it as freshwater sponge.
There is no known way for Badiaga to act on the body once it is diluted.
Homeopathy rests on an old idea. A thing that causes symptoms in a well person is used, in tiny amounts, to treat those same symptoms. Raw sponge can make skin sting and make the eyes and nose run, so homeopaths give it, diluted, for those kinds of complaints.
Once a remedy is diluted past about 12C, no molecules of the starting material are left. What is left is water, alcohol or sugar. Any change people feel is best explained by placebo (a dummy effect), by time, and by the care of the person treating them.
Badiaga is sold as small white pills, as pellets, and as drops.
Common strengths are 3X, 6X, 6C and 30C. The higher the number, the more times the sponge was diluted, and the less of it is left. At 30C none is left.
A few low strengths, and the raw powder used in folk practice, still hold real sponge material. Raw powder is sometimes rubbed on bruises. It can scratch and redden the skin, so it is not the same thing as the diluted pills.
Badiaga entered homeopathy in the 1800s through 'provings', in which healthy people took a substance and wrote down what they felt.
American and German homeopaths of that era listed it for swollen glands, sore muscles and a running nose. It stayed a minor remedy, used far less than the big names of the tradition.
Separately, dried freshwater sponge powder has a folk history in Russia and Eastern Europe, where it was rubbed on bruises to bring colour back to the skin.
See a doctor if a swollen gland lasts more than two weeks, keeps growing, or feels hard and does not hurt. Also see a doctor for a fever that will not settle, night sweats, or weight loss you cannot explain. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, a stiff neck with fever, or swelling in the face, lips or throat. And speak to your doctor before you change or stop any prescribed medicine.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
