Aurum metallicum

Evidence grade insufficient: no trial separates it from placebo, and at 30C no gold remains. Traditional tier T2: a long-standing staple of homeopathy

Home

What is Aurum metallicum? Aurum metallicum is a homeopathy remedy made from gold. Its Latin name is Aurum. Some labels call it metallic gold. It is a single remedy, made from one source and not a blend. Makers grind gold, then dilute it in steps, over and over. At the common 30C strength, no gold is left in the pill you take. Homeopaths pick it for deep sadness, grief and low mood. Some also use it for bone and joint pain. Trials do not show it works better than a sugar pill, so long use in homeopathy is not proof of effect. How does Aurum metallicum work? Homeopathy rests on two ideas. The first is that a tiny trace of a substance can treat the same signs it causes in large amounts. The second is that shaking the mix at each step leaves an imprint of the gold behind. Neither idea fits what we know about the body or about chemistry. At 30C there is nothing left in the pill to act on. Any change you notice is most likely placebo. Placebo means you truly feel better because you took something and hoped it would help, not because of the pill itself. What forms does Aurum metallicum come in? You will find it as small sugar pellets, as tablets that melt under the tongue, and as liquid drops in an alcohol base. Common strengths are 6C, 30C, 200C and 1M. Some brands also sell low strengths written as 1X, 3X or 6X, and drop forms marked LM or Q. The lower the number, the less the gold has been diluted. Where it comes from: Samuel Hahnemann, who founded homeopathy, tested gold on himself in the early 1800s. He wrote up the results in his book Materia Medica Pura. Gold had already been used as a medicine by alchemists and doctors long before him. Aurum metallicum is still taught in the classic homeopathy texts and is stocked in most homeopathic pharmacies. Gold shows up in other systems too, such as the Ayurvedic gold ash Swarna Bhasma, but that is made and used in a very different way.

Helps

What does Aurum metallicum help with? Low mood and deep sadness: This is the classic homeopathic picture for Aurum metallicum: deep gloom, self-blame and a sense that life is not worth living. No published trial tests this remedy on its own for depression. Low mood that runs deep needs proper medical care, not a remedy with no proven effect. Grief after a loss: Homeopaths pick it for grief that turns into silence, guilt and loss of hope. This use comes from case notes handed down since the 1800s. There is no trial evidence to support it. Bone and joint pain: Older homeopathic texts list night-time bone pain, especially in the face, skull and joints. This tradition is long-standing but untested. New or lasting bone pain should be checked by a doctor, since it can point to a problem that needs treatment. Sleep trouble with heavy worry: It is chosen when a person lies awake feeling hopeless or dreads the coming day. Again, this rests on old case notes, not on trials. A pounding or racing feeling in the chest: Classic texts link Aurum with a pounding chest and a heavy feeling over the heart. There is no trial evidence here. A racing or pounding heartbeat is a symptom to have checked, not a symptom to self-treat.

Where it comes from:

Samuel Hahnemann, who founded homeopathy, tested gold on himself in the early 1800s.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Aurum metallicum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Aurum metallicum?

  • Do not use if you are having thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life — get urgent help the same day instead
  • Do not use if you are relying on it in place of a medicine or therapy your doctor has prescribed
  • Do not use if you take a gold-based arthritis drug such as auranofin or gold injections, because low strengths may add more gold
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease and the pack shows a low strength such as 1X, 3X or 6X, which can still contain gold
  • Do not use if you take disulfiram or metronidazole and the product is alcohol-based drops
  • Do not use if you are treating a baby, a child or an older adult who has a symptom that has not been checked by a doctor
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor has said it is fine
  • Do not use if you have had an allergic reaction to lactose (milk sugar) pellets or to any part of the product

When should you see a doctor?

Call emergency services or a crisis line straight away if you or someone near you is thinking about suicide or self-harm. This cannot wait, and no remedy is a substitute for that call.

See a doctor soon if low mood lasts more than two weeks, if you stop eating or sleeping, or if you lose interest in everything you used to enjoy.

Get checked without delay for chest pain, a pounding or racing heartbeat, bone pain that wakes you at night, unexplained weight loss, swollen ankles, or a drop in how much you pass urine.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
