Ambrosia artemisiaefolia

Recognised traditional use in homeopathy since the 1800s; human trial evidence is insufficient and does not separate it from placebo.

What is Ambrosia artemisiaefolia? Ambrosia artemisiaefolia is a homeopathic remedy made from ragweed. Its Latin name is Ambrosia artemisiifolia. It is given as a single drug in homeopathy, not as part of a mix. Ragweed pollen is a common cause of hay fever. Homeopaths use this remedy for itchy eyes, sneezing and a runny nose in pollen time. It is made by watering ragweed down again and again, so a 30C pill holds no ragweed at all. Trials in people do not show any effect beyond placebo (a dummy pill). Long use in homeopathy is not proof that a remedy works. This page reports both sides: what the tradition claims, and what the evidence shows. How does Ambrosia artemisiaefolia work? Homeopathy rests on one idea: a tiny dose of a thing that brings on symptoms may ease those same symptoms. Ragweed pollen brings on hay fever. So homeopaths give ragweed for hay fever. There is no known way for this to work in the body. A 30C pill holds no ragweed, so nothing is left that could act on your cells. When people feel better, the likely reasons are simple. Placebo, time, care and attention all help. Pollen counts also drop as the season ends. What forms does Ambrosia artemisiaefolia come in? Sugar pills and pellets are the most common form. They go under the tongue and melt there. Most shops sell 6C, 30C and 200C strengths. Liquid drops in water and alcohol are also sold. Some makers offer a mother tincture, which is the undiluted plant extract. Ragweed is also used in allergy testing and in allergy shots. Those are medical products, not homeopathy, and they are given by a doctor. Where it comes from: Ragweed came into homeopathy in the United States in the 1800s. Doctors there saw that its pollen brought on hay fever each autumn. So they made a remedy from the same plant. It appears in old homeopathic reference books, mostly for itchy eyes and a streaming nose. It stays a minor remedy. Homeopaths reach for it far less often than big names like Arsenicum or Belladonna.

Helps

What does Ambrosia artemisiaefolia help with? Hay fever (allergy to pollen): This is the main traditional use. Old homeopathic books list it for autumn hay fever brought on by ragweed pollen. Trials in people do not show a benefit beyond a dummy pill, so do not drop proven allergy care for it. Itchy, watery, swollen eyelids: Homeopaths pick this remedy when the eyes itch so much they feel raw. That picture comes from case notes written in the 1800s. No trial has tested it for eye symptoms. Sneezing and a streaming nose: Traditional use covers hard sneezing fits with thin, watery nose discharge. This is a symptom pattern, not a tested result. Saline rinses and allergy pills have real evidence behind them. Blocked nose in pollen season: Some old texts describe a nose that runs, then blocks up fully. That is why homeopaths choose it. There is no trial support for this use. Nosebleed during hay fever: Nosebleed with hay fever is listed in the old remedy pictures. It has never been tested in a trial. See a doctor for a nosebleed that keeps coming back or will not stop. Wheezy chest in pollen season: Old texts mention a tight, wheezy chest with hay fever. Wheeze can mean asthma, which needs real treatment. Keep using your inhaler and speak to your doctor.

Where it comes from:

Ragweed came into homeopathy in the United States in the 1800s.

Who should avoid Ambrosia artemisiaefolia?

  • Never take the mother tincture (the undiluted plant extract) or a low strength such as 1X to 6X if you are allergic to ragweed, as these can still hold pollen and set off a reaction
  • Do not use it if you have ever had anaphylaxis (a severe whole-body allergic reaction) to ragweed or any plant in the daisy family
  • Never use it in place of your asthma inhaler, your adrenaline pen, or any allergy medicine your doctor gave you
  • Do not use the mother tincture or low strengths if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Do not give it to a baby or young child without asking a doctor first
  • Do not take the pellets if you must avoid lactose (milk sugar), as most pellets are made with it
  • Avoid the liquid drops if you are keeping away from alcohol

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your hay fever lasts more than two weeks, or if it stops you sleeping or working. Book an appointment if you get a lot of nosebleeds, or ear and sinus pain that will not settle.

Get help straight away if your lips, tongue or throat swell, if you come out in hives all over, if you feel faint, or if breathing becomes hard or wheezy. Use your adrenaline pen if you have one, then call emergency services.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
