Ambra grisea

A long-standing remedy in homeopathy, but trial evidence does not separate it from placebo.

Home

What is Ambra grisea? Ambra grisea is a single homeopathic remedy. It is made from ambergris, a waxy lump that forms in the gut of the sperm whale (Latin name Physeter macrocephalus). Homeopaths give it for shyness, nervous upset and poor sleep. The lump is ground up, then diluted again and again with hard shaking at each step. At 30C, the usual strength, no source material is left. What you take is a plain sugar pill, or a few drops of alcohol and water. Long use inside a tradition is not proof that something works. Trials do not set Ambra grisea apart from a placebo (a dummy pill with no drug in it). We report its traditional standing and its trial record as two separate things. How does Ambra grisea work? Homeopathy rests on two ideas. One is that a tiny dose of a thing can ease the same signs it causes in a large dose. The other is that water keeps a trace of what was once in it. Neither idea fits what we know about chemistry. At 30C there is nothing left from the whale to act on your body. So the honest answer is that no drug action can be shown. Any change you feel is best put down to placebo, to time passing, and to the long talk with the homeopath. What forms does Ambra grisea come in? You will most often see small white pills or tiny round pellets that melt under the tongue. Liquid drops in alcohol are also sold. Strengths are written as 6C, 12C, 30C or 200C. The higher the number, the more times it was diluted. Ambergris itself is also sold as a perfume material, which is a different product and not a remedy. Where it comes from: Ambergris has been traded for hundreds of years as a scent and, in older folk medicine, as a tonic. Samuel Hahnemann brought it into homeopathy in the early 1800s and wrote it up in his Chronic Diseases. It has stayed in homeopathic materia medica ever since, mainly for people who feel shy, jumpy or worn out. Sperm whales are now protected, and trade in whale products is limited by law in many countries.

Helps

What does Ambra grisea help with? Shyness and being easily embarrassed around other people: This is the picture homeopaths link most closely to Ambra grisea. The books describe someone who cannot act, speak or even use the toilet when others are near. No trial has tested the remedy for this. Nervous restlessness: Traditional homeopathic texts list fidgeting, worry and being easily startled. There is no human trial evidence that the remedy helps. Talking therapy and exercise have far better support. Trouble falling asleep because the mind will not stop: Homeopaths pick it when worry from the day keeps a person awake. Sleep often improves on its own, which makes any remedy look helpful. No trial has separated it from a placebo. Feeling worn out after grief or a shock: Old texts describe use after bad news or loss. This is tradition only. Grief that drags on or turns into deep low mood needs real support, not a sugar pill. Dry, tickly cough that comes with nerves: Classic texts mention a dry cough in company. There is no trial evidence. A cough lasting more than three weeks needs a doctor. Dizziness in older adults: Homeopathic books list dizziness with weakness in older people. This is a traditional note, not a tested claim. New dizziness can point to heart, ear or blood pressure problems and should be checked.

Where it comes from:

Ambergris has been traded for hundreds of years as a scent and, in older folk medicine, as a tonic.

Who should avoid Ambra grisea?

  • Do not use it in place of a medicine your doctor has prescribed, and never stop a prescribed drug to try it.
  • Do not rely on it for a serious problem such as chest pain, trouble breathing, a bad infection, or thoughts of harming yourself.
  • Do not give the alcohol-based drops to a child; ask for the sugar pills instead.
  • Do not take the alcohol-based drops if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or staying away from alcohol.
  • Do not take the alcohol-based drops if you take disulfiram or metronidazole (drugs that react badly with alcohol).
  • Do not take pills made with lactose (milk sugar) if lactose gives you stomach pain or diarrhoea.
  • Do not use it if you avoid animal products, as the source is a sperm whale.
  • Do not keep taking it if your symptoms are getting worse: see a doctor.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor if your symptoms last more than two weeks, or get worse at any point. Get help the same day for a cough with blood, chest pain, fainting, sudden or repeated dizziness, a high fever, or low mood that will not lift. Call emergency services for trouble breathing, face or throat swelling, or thoughts of harming yourself.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
