Voice gone hoarse for days
Your voice has gone rough and husky for days now. You may croak, drop to a whisper, or lose sound part way through a word. By the end of the day, you may have almost no voice left.
Sound comes from your voice box, or larynx, in your throat. Two small folds inside it vibrate when you speak. When they swell or get dry, your voice turns rough or fades out.
A cold or a throat infection is a common cause. So is shouting, singing, or a long day of talking. Smoke, dry air, allergies, and stomach acid rising into the throat can also play a part.
When to see someone
See a doctor if your voice is still rough after three weeks. Go sooner if you cough up blood or feel a lump in your neck. Get help fast for trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, or a high fever.
Below you will find remedies people use for a sore, hoarse throat. Each one has an evidence grade next to it. A high grade means more research stands behind it; a low grade means the proof is thin.
