It hurts to swallow anything
Every swallow brings a sharp, raw, or burning pain. Even water or your own spit can set it off. The pain may sit on one side, or spread across the whole throat and up toward your ear.
Most of the time this comes with a sore throat. A cold or flu virus is the most common reason. Strep, a germ that needs a quick swab test at the clinic, can also cause it.
Other things can leave your throat raw and sore. Dry air, smoke, yelling, or acid backing up from your stomach are common ones. Swollen glands in your neck can make each swallow feel tight and tender.
When to see someone
Get help right away if you cannot breathe well, cannot swallow your own spit, or start to drool. A muffled voice, a stiff neck, or swelling on just one side of the throat also needs fast care, and so does trouble opening your mouth. Call your doctor for a high fever, white spots on your tonsils, a rash, blood in your spit, or pain that lasts more than a week.
Below is a list of home and folk remedies people have long used for a sore throat. Each one carries a grade that shows how strong the research behind it is. The grade rates the evidence only, and is not a promise of any result for you.
