Up several times a night to pee
You fall asleep fine. Then you are awake at 1am, and again at 3am, heading to the toilet. By morning you feel worn out, and the day starts flat.
Doctors call this nocturia, which just means waking at night to pee. The bladder muscle may squeeze before the bladder is full. Your body may also make more urine at night than it once did.
Drinks late in the day play a part, and so do coffee and beer. Some pills, like water pills, send you to the toilet more. Fluid that sits in your legs by day can shift once you lie down.
When to see someone
See a doctor if you spot blood in your urine, or it burns when you pee. Get checked for fever, back pain, swollen ankles, or nights when you wake short of breath. Call too if you are very thirsty, losing weight, or your stream is weak and hard to start.
Below is a list of traditional remedies tied to overactive bladder. Each one carries a grade for how much research stands behind it, not a promise about you. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before you try any of them, above all if you take other medicine.
