Leaking before I reach the toilet
The urge hits out of nowhere. You head for the bathroom, and some urine escapes on the way. Some days you just make it, and some days you do not.
Doctors call this urge incontinence, which means leaking when the urge strikes. The bladder muscle squeezes before the bladder is full. That gives you little warning and not much time.
Many things play a part. Coffee, tea, alcohol and fizzy drinks can bother the bladder lining. Weak pelvic floor muscles, constipation, some medicines, prostate changes and a urine infection can all add to it.
When to see someone
See a doctor if you see blood in your urine, or it burns or stings when you pee. Book a visit for a fever, back or side pain, or leaking that starts all at once. Numbness between your legs, or new trouble moving your legs, needs care the same day.
Below is a list of traditional and home remedies people use for this complaint. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research stands behind it, not a promise of any result. Use the grades to decide what is worth raising with your doctor or nurse.
