Twisted my ankle, can't walk on it
Your foot rolled the wrong way. Now the ankle is sore and puffy, and it hurts to stand. Each step makes you wince, so you hop or lean on things.
Most often the foot rolls inward. That stretches or tears the tough bands on the outside of the joint, called ligaments. Blood and fluid rush to the spot, so the ankle swells and stiffens fast.
Even a mild sprain can make walking hard for a day or two. But a chip or crack in the bone can feel much the same. You cannot tell them apart by pain alone.
When to see someone
See a doctor today if you cannot take four steps on it. Do the same if the bony knob on either side is tender to press, or if the top of the foot is. Go now if the ankle looks bent out of shape, feels numb, or your toes turn cold, pale, or blue.
Below is a list of home approaches people have turned to for a rolled ankle. Each one carries a grade that shows how strong the research behind it is. A grade is not a promise, and a low grade means there is little good proof either way.
