Ankle swollen and bruised purple
Your ankle has puffed up, and the skin has turned purple or blue. It may feel warm, tight and sore to touch. Shoes and socks may no longer fit that foot.
A purple mark means small blood vessels under the skin tore. This often happens when the ankle rolls or twists past its normal range. Blood and fluid then leak into the soft tissue around the joint.
The colour can creep down toward your toes or heel. Gravity pulls the old blood lower as days pass. Purple often shifts to green, then yellow, before it clears.
When to see someone
See a doctor today if the ankle looks bent or you cannot stand on it. Numbness, a cold or pale foot, or sharp pain right on the ankle bone need a check. Get help fast for fever, red streaks, broken skin, or swelling that keeps growing.
The list below gathers remedies people have long used for a sprained ankle. Each one carries a grade that shows how strong the evidence behind it is. A high grade means better proof; a low grade means custom alone, not a promise of results.
