Thumb clicks and catches when I move it
You move your thumb and it snags. There may be a click, a catch, or a small jump. It can feel like the thumb sticks, then pops free.
The tendons that pull your thumb run through a snug tunnel at the wrist. When the lining of that tunnel swells, the glide is no longer smooth. The catch you feel is the tendon dragging instead of sliding.
This swelling often builds up from lots of gripping, lifting, or new repeated hand tasks. New parents, knitters, and heavy phone users notice it often. You may also feel a sore spot at the base of the thumb, near the wrist.
When to see someone
See a doctor or hand therapist if your thumb locks and will not straighten. Book a visit too if the hand feels numb, weak, cold, or pale, or if the pain keeps you awake. Get same-day care for a hot, red, badly swollen wrist, for a fever, or for a thumb hurt in a fall.
Below is a list of home and folk remedies that people have long used for this kind of thumb pain. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research stands behind it. A low grade means the proof is thin or mixed, so read it with care and talk to your doctor first.
