Throwing up from period pain
The cramps build, and then your stomach turns. Some people get sick once and feel better. Others heave for hours and cannot keep water down.
During a period, the womb makes prostaglandins. These are natural body chemicals that make the womb squeeze. High levels can also stir up the gut, which brings nausea, loose stools and vomiting.
Strong pain by itself can make you sick too. It can drop your blood pressure and leave you clammy, faint and green. In some people, another cause sits behind it, such as endometriosis or fibroids.
When to see someone
See a doctor if you cannot keep fluids down for a day, or you feel faint and dizzy. Go the same day for fever, blood in your vomit, or pain that no pill touches. Book a check-up if this is new, getting worse, or you soak a pad each hour.
Below is a list of home and folk remedies people use for period cramps. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research has looked at it. A grade is not a promise, so read it first and ask your doctor or pharmacist before you try something new.
