Shin bone sore to touch
You press the front of your lower leg, and it hurts. The sore spot sits right on the bone, not in the muscle. Even a light touch, or the top of a sock, can bother it.
This is a common sign of shin splints. The hard surface of the bone and the tissue over it get stressed. Long runs, new shoes, hills, or a jump in training can start it.
Flat feet, hard ground, and tight calves add to the load. The tender strip often runs a few inches up the inner shin. Some people also see mild swelling or feel warmth there.
When to see someone
See a doctor if the sore spot is sharp and small, about the size of a coin. Pain at night, pain when you just walk, or pain that grows each week also needs a check. Go the same day for heavy swelling, bruising, fever, numb toes, or a cold, pale foot.
Below are remedies people have used for shin splints, each with a grade. The grade shows how strong the research is. Talk with your doctor before you try any of them.
