Aching front of leg when I run
You feel a dull ache along the front of your lower leg. It often starts soon after you begin to run. Sometimes it fades as you warm up, then comes back near the end.
This pattern is usually called shin splints. The muscles and the thin sheath around your shin bone get sore and swollen. Doing too much, too soon, is the most common reason.
Hard roads, worn shoes, and tight calves add to the load. Flat feet or a new hill route can too. The ache is often spread along a few inches of bone, not stuck in one tiny spot.
When to see someone
See a doctor if the pain sits in one small spot on the bone and hurts when you press it. Get checked for pain at rest or at night, swelling, redness, warmth, or numb toes. If your lower leg feels very tight, numb, or cold during a run, and it does not ease when you stop, get care the same day.
Below is a list of remedies people use for shin splints, each with a grade. The grade shows how much research stands behind that remedy, not what it will do for you. A low grade means little study has been done, so talk with your doctor before you try one.
