Sharp pain in side that comes in waves
The pain grabs you in one side or in your back, just below the ribs. It builds, peaks, then backs off for a while. Then it rolls in again.
This wave pattern has a name: colic. It shows up when a tube inside the body tries to push something along. With kidney stones, a small hard lump moves down the tube from the kidney to the bladder.
The pain may spread to your groin or lower belly. You may feel sick to your stomach or need to pee often. Other problems can cause side pain too, so a stone is not the only answer.
When to see someone
Get care the same day if you have a fever or chills along with the pain. Go to an emergency room if you cannot pee at all, keep throwing up, or see blood in your urine. Pain so bad that you cannot sit still needs a doctor right away.
Below is a list of home and folk remedies linked to kidney stones. Each one carries a grade that shows how strong the research behind it is. A grade is not a promise, so talk with your doctor before you try anything here.
