You had a panic attack once, maybe more than once. Now part of your mind scans the shop, the bus, the line at the till. It keeps asking one thing: what if it starts here, in front of people?
This fear is common after a panic attack. Your body tagged that place as risky, and it wants to warn you. So the alarm can ring even when you are safe.
Doctors call this anticipatory anxiety, which means fear of the fear. Many people start to avoid the spot where it hit. You may sit near the door, leave early, or skip the trip.
When to see someone
Chest pain, or pain that spreads to your arm or jaw, needs same-day medical care. Get checked too if you faint, or if your heart races and will not settle. Tell your doctor if fear keeps you home, if you drink to cope, or if you think of harming yourself.
