Jaw locks up and won't open
You go to open your mouth, and it stops. The jaw feels stuck, or caught part way. It may free itself in seconds, or stay that way much longer.
The joint sits just in front of each ear. A small pad of cartilage rides inside it. If that pad slips out of place, the jaw can jam.
Tight chewing muscles can also hold the jaw shut. Night grinding, stress, and long dental visits all add strain. A few people get stuck open instead, often after a wide yawn.
When to see someone
See a dentist or doctor if the lock will not let go. Get same-day care if your jaw is stuck wide open, or if you cannot drink. Go now for fever, face swelling, numbness, or a lock that starts after a blow.
Below are remedies people use for jaw joint trouble, drawn from our reviewed list. Each has a grade for how strong the research is, not a promise of results. Talk with your dentist before you try one, above all if your jaw locks often.
