Jaw clicks and pops when chewing
You bite into a sandwich and your jaw clicks. Sometimes it is a soft pop near your ear. You may feel it more than you hear it.
The jaw joint sits just in front of each ear. A small pad of cartilage rides between the bones as you chew. When that pad slips out of place and back, you get a click or a pop.
Clenching your teeth can set this off. So can grinding at night, chewing lots of gum, or holding stress in your face. A bite that sits a bit off, or an old knock to the jaw, may also play a part.
When to see someone
See a dentist or doctor if your jaw locks open or locks shut. Go too if it hurts a lot, swells, or you cannot open wide enough to eat. A sudden change in how your teeth meet, fever, or ear pain with the clicking also needs a check.
Below is a list of traditional home remedies linked to jaw joint trouble. Each one carries a grade for the strength of the research behind it. A grade tells you about the evidence, not about your own jaw.
