Feel faint in a hot shower
You are under the hot water when your head starts to swim. The room may look grey, and sound can go dull or far away. Some people have to sit down on the shower floor fast.
Heat makes the small blood vessels in your skin open wide. Blood pools near the surface and in your legs. For a moment, less of it gets up to your brain.
Low blood pressure makes this more likely. Standing still in a long, steamy shower adds to it. So can an empty stomach, too little water, alcohol, or some pills for blood pressure.
When to see someone
See a doctor if you have passed out in the shower, even once. Get help right away if it comes with chest pain, a pounding heart, slurred speech, or a bad headache. Book a visit if it happens most days, if you are pregnant, or if you take heart or blood pressure pills.
Below is a list of remedies people have used for low blood pressure. Each one has a grade for how strong the evidence behind it is. A low grade means the proof is thin, so talk to your doctor before you try something new.
