Face and eyes puffy in the morning
You look in the mirror after waking and your face looks full and soft. Your eyelids feel heavy, and the skin under your eyes may look swollen or shiny. Rings or glasses can feel tight for a while.
When you lie flat all night, fluid does not drain down to your feet. It can settle in soft, loose places like the eyelids and cheeks. Sleeping face down or with a low pillow can add to it.
Salty food late at night, alcohol, crying and short sleep are common triggers. So are hay fever, a cold, and hormone shifts before a period. Some medicines, and kidney, thyroid or heart trouble, can also play a part.
When to see someone
Call emergency help if your lips, tongue or throat swell and breathing feels hard. See a doctor if the puffiness stays all day, your urine looks foamy, or you pass much less urine than normal. Book a visit too for quick weight gain, breathlessness when lying flat, a red or painful eye, or high blood pressure.
The list below holds traditional remedies tied to fluid retention in the body, not to your face alone. Each one carries a grade that shows how much research stands behind it, from solid study down to folk use only. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before you try any of them, above all if you take other medicine.
