Ankles swell up by evening
By late in the day, your shoes feel tight. The skin around your ankles looks puffy and stretched. Press it with a finger and a small dent may stay for a moment.
This is fluid settling in the lowest part of your body. Gravity pulls it down while you sit or stand for hours. Many people find it looks better in the morning, after a night lying flat.
Long days on your feet can add to it. So can hot weather, salty meals, extra weight, and pregnancy. Some pills, such as certain blood pressure drugs, list puffy ankles as a side effect.
When to see someone
See a doctor if just one ankle swells, or the skin turns red, hot, and sore. Get help right away for chest pain, or if breathing feels hard when you lie down. Call your doctor if the swelling starts fast, you gain weight within days, or the skin cracks or weeps.
Below is a list of home and folk remedies people have used for fluid buildup. Each one has a grade that shows how much research stands behind it, not a promise about you. Read the grade first, and talk with your doctor before you try any of them.
