Eyes itchy and watering all day
Your eyes itch from the moment you wake up. You rub them, and they water even more. By the afternoon they feel gritty, pink and sore.
Pollen is a common reason for this. It lands on the wet surface of your eye and sticks there. Your body reads it as a threat, and the itch and tears follow.
Dust, pet hair and mould spores can set off the same thing. Wind, smoke and dry indoor air often make it worse. Rubbing spreads the pollen around and keeps the itch going.
When to see someone
See a doctor if your eye hurts rather than itches, or if your sight turns blurry. Thick yellow or green gunk, one eye much redder than the other, or pain in bright light all need a check that day. If you wear contact lenses and an eye goes red and sore, take the lenses out and ring your eye doctor.
Below is a list of traditional remedies linked with hay fever. Each one carries an evidence grade, which shows how much research has looked at it. A grade is not a promise of results, so read it first and ask your pharmacist before you mix anything with your usual medicines.
