Deep sore spot in one buttock
You can point to one sore spot deep in one buttock. It sits under the muscle, not on the skin. Pressing on it can feel tender or bruised.
Sitting often makes it worse. Long drives and hard chairs can set it off. The ache may spread into the back of that thigh.
A small muscle deep in the hip may play a part. Doctors call it the piriformis, and the big sciatic nerve runs close by. Long sitting, a fall, new hills or extra miles, or a thick wallet in a back pocket can all feed into it.
When to see someone
Get care right away if you lose feeling between your legs, or leak urine or stool. See a doctor soon for leg weakness, a numb foot, or toes that catch when you walk. Call too if the pain came after a fall, brings fever or swelling, wakes you at night, or lasts more than a few weeks.
Below is a list of remedies people have used for this kind of pain. Each one has a grade for how much research stands behind it. A grade is not a promise of results, so check with your doctor first.
