Can't sit on hard chairs without hurting
A wooden chair, a bus seat, a bleacher bench. Within a few minutes, one side of your backside starts to ache. You shift your weight, cross your legs, or stand up just to get away from it.
The sore spot often sits deep under one buttock, near the part you rest on. Under that area is the piriformis, a small muscle deep in the hip. When that muscle is tight or tender, a hard seat presses right on it.
Long drives, long desk days, and a thick wallet in your back pocket all add pressure. New running, cycling, or lifting can stir it up too. Most people feel it on one side, and soft seats often feel fine.
When to see someone
See a doctor if you lose feeling in your groin or inner thighs. New trouble controlling your pee or poop, or clear weakness in one leg, needs care the same day. Get checked too if the pain follows a fall, comes with fever or swelling, or wakes you at night.
Below is a list of traditional and home remedies linked to piriformis syndrome. Each one has an evidence grade that shows how much study stands behind it, not a promise of results. A low grade means little or no solid research, so treat those as ideas to raise with your doctor.
