Can see my scalp through hair
You part your hair and see more skin than before. In bright light, your part looks wide and your ponytail feels thin. That can be unsettling, and you are far from alone.
Hair grows in cycles. Some hairs always rest and drop out. A shock to the body can push many hairs into the resting phase at once, so the hair thins all over.
The cause often comes two or three months before you notice it. Think of a fever, surgery, a new baby, a crash diet, or a hard stretch of stress. Low iron, thyroid changes, and some new drugs can also play a part.
When to see someone
See a doctor for bare patches, smooth round spots, or a red, scaly, sore scalp. Go if the shed lasts past six months, or you feel very tired and cold. A blood test can check iron and thyroid, and a child's hair loss always needs a doctor.
The list below comes from a reviewed set for telogen effluvium, the name for this kind of shedding. Each item has a grade that shows how strong the proof is. A grade is not a promise, so check with your doctor first.
