What is Yokukansan? Yokukansan is a classical Japanese Kampo herbal formula composed of seven botanicals that work together to calm the nervous system. It has been prescribed in Japan for over 400 years , originally for childhood irritability and nervous conditions, and is now widely studied and used for behavioral symptoms in dementia. It is one of the most clinically researched Kampo formulas in modern Japanese medicine. How does Yokukansan work? Yokukansan is thought to gently modulate the brain's glutamate and serotonin systems, both of which play key roles in mood, agitation, and sleep. The Uncaria hook component contains alkaloids believed to reduce overactive nerve signaling, while the whole formula together appears to calm stress responses without heavy sedation. It may also support healthy cortisol regulation, helping the body respond to stress more smoothly. What forms does Yokukansan come in? In Japan, Yokukansan is most commonly dispensed as standardized granule powder (TJ-54 by Tsumura), which dissolves in warm water and is taken two to three times daily. Tablet forms are available for convenience. Traditional decoctions involve boiling the raw herbs. Outside Japan, liquid extracts and capsules are increasingly available through integrative health providers. Where it comes from: Yokukansan originates from a 16th-century Chinese medical text and was adopted into Japanese Kampo practice during the Edo period. It was classically prescribed for children's nervous irritability, night crying, and convulsions. In the 21st century, Japanese geriatric and psychiatric researchers began studying it for dementia-related behavioral symptoms, generating a substantial body of clinical trial data that has brought it international attention.

Helps

What does Yokukansan help with? Dementia agitation and aggression: This is Yokukansan's most well-studied use. It helps reduce the agitation, aggression, wandering, and verbal outbursts that are common and distressing in dementia, often without causing the heavy sedation seen with conventional medications. Many families and caregivers report it makes daily care noticeably more manageable. Anxiety and irritability: Yokukansan has a long history of calming nervous tension and irritability. It appears to work by gently dampening overactive stress signals in the brain, helping people feel less on edge without dulling their alertness or mood. Sleep problems and insomnia: By calming the nervous system in the evening, Yokukansan can make it easier to fall asleep and reduce nighttime agitation — particularly in older adults whose sleep is disrupted by anxiety or dementia-related restlessness. Behavioral symptoms in Alzheimer's disease: Clinical studies in Japan show improvements in the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), including hallucinations, suspicion, and emotional outbursts. It is sometimes used alongside conventional Alzheimer's medications. Lewy body dementia symptoms: Lewy body dementia can cause vivid hallucinations and extreme agitation that are difficult to treat. Early clinical evidence from Japan suggests Yokukansan may reduce these symptoms with a favorable safety profile compared to antipsychotics. Autism-related irritability (children): In its classical role, Yokukansan was used for childhood nervous conditions. Some modern small studies in children with autism spectrum disorder suggest it may reduce irritability and repetitive behaviors, reflecting its historical pediatric use. Stress and nervous tension: For everyday stress, Yokukansan helps take the edge off without sedation. It supports a calmer emotional baseline, making stressful situations feel more manageable — particularly helpful for people who tend toward irritability under pressure. Depression with anxiety features: Some evidence suggests Yokukansan may help with the anxious, agitated side of depression, complementing rather than replacing conventional treatment. It is sometimes used as an add-on in Japanese psychiatric practice. Schizophrenia-related anxiety (adjunct): Small Japanese trials have explored adding Yokukansan to antipsychotic treatment for patients with persistent anxiety and agitation. Early results suggest it may reduce emotional distress with minimal added side effects. Borderline personality irritability: Pilot research from Japan suggests Yokukansan may help reduce the emotional reactivity and impulsive irritability associated with borderline personality disorder, though this remains a preliminary finding.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
