Ting Li Zi

A long-standing staple of Chinese medicine for chest fluid and wheezing, but human trial evidence is insufficient and the seed carries heart risk.

Home

What is Ting Li Zi? Ting Li Zi is the dried seed of two small mustard-family plants. They are Lepidium apetalum and Descurainia sophia. Chinese medicine uses it for a wet, noisy chest and for swelling caused by fluid. It is treated as a strong, draining herb, not a gentle daily tonic. It is almost always given inside a formula with other herbs. A single herb from Chinese medicine, it is rarely taken alone. The human evidence is thin. No sound trials in people support these uses, and long tradition is not proof of effect. The seed also holds heart-active compounds, so it needs care and a trained guide. How does Ting Li Zi work? In animals, seed extracts raise urine flow and help the body shed salt and water. That fits the traditional idea of "draining water". Whether the same thing happens in people has not been shown. The seed contains cardiac glycosides. These are plant compounds that act on the heart muscle, much like the drug digoxin. In lab and animal work they can make the heartbeat stronger and slower. Cell studies also report anti-inflammatory and cough-easing effects. These are early findings. They do not tell you what a cup of the decoction (water brew) will do in your body. What forms does Ting Li Zi come in? It comes as whole dried seeds for making a decoction (a water brew). The seeds are tiny and are often lightly dry-fried first. Frying is said to soften the herb's harsh action. Because the seeds are so small, they are tied in a cloth bag before boiling. You may also meet it as a powder, a pill or a granule. These are nearly always mixed with other herbs. There is no standard, tested extract sold for home use. The strength of any product is unknown unless a lab has checked it. Where it comes from: Ting Li Zi appears in the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing. That is an early Chinese herbal from around the second century. It was listed among the strong, draining herbs. Zhang Zhongjing used it in Ting Li Da Zao Xie Fei Tang. This formula pairs the harsh seed with sweet jujube dates to soften it. Chinese doctors still use that formula for phlegm and fluid in the lungs.

Helps

What does Ting Li Zi help with? Wheezing and cough with thick phlegm: This is the classic use, going back about 1,800 years . Practitioners pick it when the chest feels full and breathing is noisy. No human trial shows that the single herb helps this. Fluid in or around the lungs: Old texts use it to drain fluid from the chest. Fluid around the lungs is a serious medical problem. See a doctor for it; do not treat it at home. Swelling from fluid (oedema): It is used as a strong water-moving herb for a puffy face, legs or belly. Animal studies show more urine flow. There is no good trial in people. Trouble passing urine with swelling: Traditional texts list it for scant urine that comes with puffiness. Evidence in people is lacking. New or painful trouble passing urine needs a doctor, not a herb. Heart failure with fluid build-up: Chinese hospitals have studied formulas that contain Ting Li Zi for heart failure. We could not verify a clear, reliable trial. Never use it in place of prescribed heart drugs.

Where it comes from:

Ting Li Zi appears in the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Ting Li Zi need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Ting Li Zi?

  • Do not use if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding
  • Do not use if you take digoxin or any other digitalis heart drug
  • Do not use if you have a heart rhythm problem, such as a slow or uneven heartbeat
  • Do not use if you have heart failure, unless your heart doctor agrees and checks you
  • Do not use if you have low potassium (a low level of a key salt in the blood)
  • Do not use if you take water pills (diuretics) without a doctor checking your blood salts
  • Do not use if you have kidney disease or reduced kidney function
  • Do not use if you are frail, dehydrated or have a dry cough with no phlegm
  • Do not use if you have long-term diarrhoea or a weak, easily upset stomach
  • Do not give it to a child unless a qualified practitioner has prescribed it

When should you see a doctor?

Get emergency help if your heartbeat feels slow, racing or uneven, or if you faint, have chest pain, or see a yellow or blurred tinge to everything. These can be signs of heart-glycoside poisoning.

See a doctor the same week if your swelling gets worse, you become very thirsty or weak, or you keep vomiting.

Always see a doctor first for breathlessness, chest fluid or new leg swelling. These need a diagnosis, not a home remedy.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
