Thyroidinum

Recognised in homeopathic writing since about 1890 (T1), but human trials do not separate it from placebo; evidence grade insufficient.

What is Thyroidinum? Thyroidinum is a homeopathic remedy made from the dried thyroid gland of a sheep (Latin name: Ovis aries). It is also called thyroid gland extract. People use it for signs of a slow thyroid, such as tiredness, weight gain, dry skin and feeling cold. Like all homeopathic remedies, it is made by watering down the source material again and again. At the common 30C strength, no sheep thyroid is left in the pill. Low strengths such as 1X or 3X can still hold real thyroid hormone, which does act on the body. Here is the plain verdict. Trials do not show that it works better than a dummy pill. Long use in a tradition is not proof of effect, and we say that once here for the whole page. How does Thyroidinum work? No one has shown how Thyroidinum could work at normal homeopathic strengths. At 30C the source has been watered down so far that not one molecule (a tiny particle of matter) of sheep thyroid is likely to be left. Homeopathy rests on the idea of "like cures like". The claim is that a substance that causes signs in a well person can, once watered down, ease those same signs in a sick person. Homeopaths also say that shaking at each step leaves an imprint in the liquid, but no test has ever shown such an imprint. One thing here is real. Very low strengths, such as the mother tincture or 1X to 3X, can still hold thyroid hormone from the gland. That hormone can speed up the heart and change how fast your body burns energy, so those forms are not inert (not free of real effect). What forms does Thyroidinum come in? Thyroidinum comes as small sugar pellets, tablets or liquid drops. Pellets are the most common form and are meant to melt under the tongue. Strengths are written as a number with an X or a C, such as 3X, 6X, 6C, 30C or 200C. A higher number means more watering-down steps and less chance that any source material is left. Some shop products blend it with other homeopathic remedies. Do not mix it up with desiccated thyroid, sold under names like Armour Thyroid. That is a licensed drug with a measured hormone dose and needs a prescription. Where it comes from: Doctors in the late 1880s found that feeding sheep thyroid helped people whose own thyroid had almost stopped working. It was one of the first gland treatments in medicine. Homeopaths soon tested the dried gland on healthy people and wrote down what they felt. Thyroidinum entered homeopathic books around 1890 and has stayed in them since. It is a known remedy in homeopathy, but not a leading one. Its record sits inside one tradition and goes back a little over a hundred years.

Helps

What does Thyroidinum help with? Tiredness linked to a slow thyroid: This is the main reason people reach for Thyroidinum. Homeopathic books describe a person who feels heavy, weak and worn out. No trial has tested the remedy for this, and tiredness has many causes, so a blood test comes first. Weight gain that is hard to shift: Homeopaths have long paired this remedy with slow weight gain and puffiness. There is no trial evidence that it helps anyone lose weight. Low-strength forms that still hold real hormone can cause weight loss, but in an unsafe and uncontrolled way. Feeling cold all the time: Old homeopathic notes list a strong dislike of cold as a key sign for this remedy. That comes from provings and case notes, not from trials. Feeling cold with tiredness and dry skin is worth a thyroid blood test. Dry skin, brittle hair and hair loss: These are classic signs of an underactive thyroid, and homeopathic texts group them under Thyroidinum. No controlled study has tested the remedy for skin or hair. Treating the underlying thyroid problem is what changes these signs. Low mood and slow thinking: Traditional homeopathic pictures include dullness, poor memory and low spirits. There is no human trial support for this use. Low mood that lasts more than two weeks needs a proper assessment. Slow growth in children: Some older homeopathic writing suggests this remedy for children who grow slowly. We would not recommend acting on that. A child who is not growing as expected needs a doctor to check their thyroid and other causes first. Chilblains (painful red patches on fingers and toes in cold weather): A few homeopathic materia medica entries link Thyroidinum to chilblains. This rests on case reports from one tradition only. No trial has looked at it.

Do not mix it up with desiccated thyroid, sold under names like Armour Thyroid. That is a licensed drug with a measured hormone dose and needs a prescription.

Where it comes from:

Doctors in the late 1880s found that feeding sheep thyroid helped people whose own thyroid had almost stopped working.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Thyroidinum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Thyroidinum?

  • Do not use if you take levothyroxine or any other prescribed thyroid medicine and are thinking of lowering or stopping it — never change that dose yourself.
  • Do not use if you have an overactive thyroid (a thyroid that makes too much hormone).
  • Do not use if you have atrial fibrillation (a fast, irregular heartbeat) or any other heart rhythm problem.
  • Do not use if you have angina (chest pain from narrowed heart arteries), heart failure or have had a heart attack.
  • Do not use if you have osteoporosis (thin, fragile bones), because extra thyroid hormone speeds bone loss.
  • Do not use if you have Addison's disease or any other untreated adrenal gland problem.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your own doctor has checked it and agrees.
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby or child: a doctor must test their thyroid first.
  • Do not use if you take warfarin or another blood thinner, until a doctor has said it is safe for you.
  • Do not use if you have diabetes and take insulin or diabetes tablets, without telling your doctor first.
  • Do not use if you avoid animal products for religious, ethical or personal reasons — it is made from sheep gland tissue.
  • Do not use if you are relying on it instead of tested treatment for a thyroid problem a doctor has found.

When should you see a doctor?

Get emergency help now if you have chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat, severe shaking or you feel faint after taking any thyroid product.

Get emergency help for anyone who becomes very cold, very drowsy or confused with a known slow thyroid. That is a medical emergency.

See your doctor within a few days if you are tired, gaining weight, losing hair or always cold. A simple blood test can show whether your thyroid is the cause.

Also see your doctor if you have a lump or swelling in your neck, trouble swallowing, or a hoarse voice that lasts more than three weeks.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
