This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!

Sheng Ma (升麻) is the rhizome of several Cimicifuga species — primarily Cimicifuga foetida, C. heracleifolia, and C. dahurica — harvested in autumn and dried for medicinal use. It has been a fixture of Traditional Chinese Medicine for more than two millennia, appearing in foundational texts like the Shennong Bencao Jing. While it shares botanical family ties with the North American Black Cohosh (Actaea racemosa), Sheng Ma is pharmacologically and traditionally distinct.
Sheng Ma works through multiple overlapping pathways: its triterpene glycosides (especially actein and cimicifugoside) interact with estrogen receptor beta, offering mild hormonal support without strongly stimulating estrogen receptor alpha. Its phenolic acids — ferulic acid and isoferulic acid — calm inflammatory signaling and help lower fever by moderating the body's heat response. The herb is also considered to have an 'ascending' energy in TCM, meaning it helps lift and tone tissues and organs that have lost their structural support.
In TCM clinical practice, Sheng Ma is almost always used as part of a multi-herb decoction rather than in isolation. The most famous formula containing it is Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi), used for prolapse and fatigue. Modern practitioners also use standardized extracts in capsule or tablet form, though the isolated extract is pharmacologically different from the whole-herb decoction. Tinctures preserve more of the volatile compounds than dried powder alone.
Sheng Ma's first recorded use appears in the Shennong Bencao Jing (circa 1st–2nd century CE), where it was classified as an upper-grade herb. By the Tang Dynasty it was firmly established in fever management and detoxification formulas. Its use spread to Japan (Kampo medicine) and Korea, where it remains a standard herb today. In the Qing Dynasty, it became strongly associated with Buzhong Yiqi Tang for prolapse — one of the most famous and widely studied herbal formulas in East Asian medicine.
What it is typically used for, usual dose, cautions, and the study behind it where real trial data exists.
