Pancreatinum

Recognised use within homeopathy only; no human trials of Pancreatinum exist, and homeopathy overall has not outperformed placebo.

Home

What is Pancreatinum? Pancreatinum is a homeopathic remedy made from pancreas tissue. The tissue comes from cattle (Bos) or pigs (Sus). It is also sold as Pancreas extract. Homeopaths give it for gut complaints they link to the pancreas. One example is a heavy, bloated feeling after fatty food. The starting material is watered down again and again, with shaking between each step. At the common 30C strength, almost none of the first pancreas material is left in the pill or drops you take. Very low strengths (1X, 2X, 3X) can still hold real amounts of pancreas enzyme. Here is the honest verdict up front. No human trials of Pancreatinum have been published, and trials of homeopathy as a whole have not shown any effect beyond placebo (a dummy treatment). Long use in tradition is not proof that something works, and that applies to everything on this page. How does Pancreatinum work? Homeopathy rests on one idea. A substance that causes symptoms in a well person is said to calm those same symptoms in a sick person, once it is watered down a lot. Practitioners also use "sarcodes". These are remedies made from healthy animal tissue, like this one, and they are meant to "support" the matching human organ. No one can explain how a 30C dilution could act on the body, because no source material can be measured in it. The idea is a belief inside the tradition, not a proven path in the body. Real pancreatin, the undiluted enzyme, does have a known action. It helps break down fat, starch and protein in the gut, and doctors prescribe it for people whose pancreas cannot make enough enzyme. That is a different product from a homeopathic 30C dilution, so do not mix the two up. What forms does Pancreatinum come in? You will find it in these forms: Sugar pellets or tablets that melt under your tongue, usually 6C, 12C or 30C. Liquid drops in a water-and-alcohol base, in the same range of strengths. Low decimal strengths such as 3X, which may still hold small but real amounts of pancreas enzyme. Mixed digestive formulas that list Pancreatinum next to other homeopathic ingredients. Where it comes from: Pancreatinum comes from the organ-remedy branch of homeopathy. These remedies are called sarcodes. The branch took shape in Europe and North America in the late 1800s. Homeopaths of that time began to make remedies from healthy animal glands and organs. They believed each one would act on the matching organ in a patient. It has never been one of homeopathy's main remedies. It shows up in materia medica books (homeopathy's reference texts) and in modern digestive blends. It has no standing outside homeopathy and no role in other traditional systems.

Helps

What does Pancreatinum help with? Bloating and heaviness after fatty meals: This is the top reason homeopaths reach for Pancreatinum. No trial has tested it for this. So any benefit people report could come from placebo, or just from eating less fat. If fatty meals always upset you, ask a doctor to look into it. The cause may lie in your gallbladder, pancreas or bowel. Poor appetite and slow digestion: Old homeopathic texts point to this remedy when appetite is dull and food seems to sit in the stomach. There is no human evidence for that use. Appetite loss that lasts, along with weight loss, needs a medical check. It is not a job for a home remedy. Loose, greasy or pale stools: Homeopaths link these stools to the pancreas, and they may suggest Pancreatinum. Greasy, pale stools that float can be a sign of pancreatic insufficiency (the pancreas not making enough digestive enzymes). They can also be a sign of coeliac disease. Both need a real diagnosis and prescribed treatment. Do not treat this symptom on your own. General "pancreatic support": This idea comes from tradition, not from medicine. No test shows that a homeopathic dilution changes how the pancreas works. Never let it take the place of insulin, prescribed enzymes, or any treatment for diabetes or pancreatitis (a swollen, sore pancreas).

You will find it in these forms:

Sugar pellets or tablets that melt under your tongue, usually 6C, 12C or 30C.

Liquid drops in a water-and-alcohol base, in the same range of strengths.

Low decimal strengths such as 3X, which may still hold small but real amounts of pancreas enzyme.

Mixed digestive formulas that list Pancreatinum next to other homeopathic ingredients.

Where it comes from:

Pancreatinum comes from the organ-remedy branch of homeopathy.

Who should avoid Pancreatinum?

  • Do not use this in place of insulin, diabetes tablets, or any treatment your doctor has prescribed.
  • Do not use it instead of prescribed pancreatic enzyme replacement if you have pancreatic insufficiency (a pancreas that cannot make enough digestive enzymes) or cystic fibrosis (an inherited disease affecting the lungs and digestion).
  • Do not use it to treat pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) — this is a medical emergency, not a self-care problem.
  • Do not use it if you are allergic to pork or beef products, because the source material comes from pigs or cattle.
  • Do not give it to a baby or young child, or use it while pregnant or breastfeeding, without asking a doctor first.
  • Do not use the sugar pellets if you have a severe lactose intolerance (trouble digesting milk sugar) without checking the label.
  • Avoid the liquid drops if you are avoiding alcohol, as they are usually made with an alcohol base.
  • Avoid it if your faith or diet rules out pig- or cattle-derived products, and ask the maker which animal source was used.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor promptly if you have ongoing pale, greasy stools that float, unexplained weight loss, yellow skin or eyes, or a persistent ache in your upper belly that spreads to your back. Call emergency services for sudden severe upper belly pain with vomiting, or for signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or lips, a spreading rash or trouble breathing. Also speak to your doctor if you have been putting off prescribed treatment for diabetes or a pancreas problem while trying this remedy.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
