Lyssinum

Recognised in homeopathy since 1833, but human trials show no effect beyond placebo, so the evidence stays insufficient.

Home

What is Lyssinum? Lyssinum is a single remedy used in homeopathy, not a blend. It is also sold as Lyssin or Hydrophobinum. Its Latin name means the saliva of a rabid dog, and that saliva is the starting material. That material is diluted over and over, and shaken at each step. At 30C, the usual strength, none of the source is left. The pellet or drop you take holds no rabies material at all, so it cannot give you rabies. Homeopaths reach for it when a person has fear of water, sudden rage, or nerves that feel raw. Long use in a tradition is not proof that a remedy works. In trials, homeopathy has not beaten placebo, a dummy pill with no drug in it. How does Lyssinum work? Short answer: no one has shown that it works, and there is no known way it could. Homeopathy rests on two ideas. One is that a thing which causes symptoms in a well person can ease those same symptoms in a sick one. The other is that shaking a liquid while you dilute it makes it act more strongly. Neither idea fits what we know about chemistry. At 30C, not one particle of the source is left to act. Any change a person feels is most likely from hope, care and time, not from the pellet. What forms does Lyssinum come in? Pellets of 30C are the form you will see most. They are small white balls of milk sugar, and you let them melt in your mouth. Liquid drops come in water and alcohol. You put them under the tongue or in a little water. Labels run from 6C up to 200C and higher, such as 1M. All are past the point where any source is left. A higher number means more diluted, not more medicine. Where it comes from: Constantine Hering, an American homeopath, made this remedy in 1833. He took saliva from a dog with rabies and diluted it. It belongs to a group homeopaths call nosodes, which are remedies made from diseased material. Hering's volunteers took it and wrote down what they felt. That list became the picture of its use. It has stayed a minor remedy. It is known across homeopathy, but it is not a staple of daily practice.

Helps

What does Lyssinum help with? Fear of water or of the sound of running water: This is the classic use in homeopathy, and it comes from the 1833 notes, not from trials. No human study has tested it for this. If a fear stops you washing, drinking or leaving the house, talk to a doctor. Talking therapy for fear has good proof behind it. Fear of dogs, and distress after a dog bite: Homeopaths have used it for the shock and fear that linger after a bite. There is no trial evidence for this. A bite is a medical matter first. Wash the wound, then go to a hospital the same day for rabies shots and a tetanus check. Do not use pellets in place of those shots. Sudden rage or angry outbursts: The remedy picture describes flashes of anger and a wish to bite or strike. That picture comes from volunteer reports, not from controlled studies. Anger that scares you or the people near you needs a doctor's help. Please do not wait. Headache said to be worse near water or bright light: This is a traditional pointer, used to pick the remedy rather than a proven use. No study supports it. A new, very bad or daily headache should be checked by a doctor. Feeling jumpy and raw, with too much sense of noise, light and touch: Homeopaths use it when every sound and light feels too much. Again, this rests on the old provings alone. Many things cause this, from poor sleep to anxiety to illness. A doctor can help you find the cause.

Where it comes from:

Constantine Hering, an American homeopath, made this remedy in 1833.

If this is an emergency

Some reactions to Lyssinum need urgent care. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department straight away — do not wait to see whether it passes.

Who should avoid Lyssinum?

  • Do not use if you have been bitten, scratched or licked by an animal that might carry rabies; go straight to a hospital for the shots instead
  • Do not use if you have any sign of rabies, such as fear of water, confusion, trouble swallowing or muscle spasms; call an ambulance
  • Do not use if you are taking it in place of a medicine your doctor has prescribed
  • Do not use if you are choosing it instead of a vaccine for yourself, your child or your pet
  • Do not use if you cannot digest lactose (milk sugar) and the pellets are milk-sugar based; ask for a liquid form
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor knows; liquid forms often hold a lot of alcohol
  • Do not use if you are giving it to a baby or a young child who has a fever, a rash or a bite; a doctor must see them first
  • Do not use if you are offered a low dilution or a raw mother tincture; raw saliva material must never be taken by anyone
  • Do not use if you are avoiding alcohol for health or recovery reasons and only drops are on offer

When should you see a doctor?

Go to a hospital emergency department right away if any animal has bitten, scratched or licked you, even lightly. Rabies shots only work before signs start.

Get help fast for fever, confusion, fear of water, trouble swallowing, muscle spasms, or rage that frightens you or the people around you.

See your own doctor if fear, anger or raw nerves are wearing you down day after day.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
