Track Linden (lime) flower with reminders and record whether it helped, in the app.
Linden flower is the dried flower of the small-leaved lime tree, Tilia cordata. It is drunk as a mild, sweet tea. In Europe it is a long-standing home remedy for colds, chills and restless evenings.
The flower is picked with its pale, wing-like bract (a small leaf). Dried, it is sold as Lindenblüte or linden blossom. The tree has no link to the citrus lime.
Here is the honest verdict. Human evidence is thin. No good trial shows it shortens a cold or calms anxiety.
Long traditional use is not proof that a remedy works. It is not proof that it is safe either. For most adults the tea is still a low-risk drink.
Nobody has shown clearly how linden flower acts in people. The ideas below come from the lab, not from patients.
The flowers hold mucilage, a slippery plant gum. On contact it may coat a dry, scratchy throat. That is a physical effect and is easy to believe, but it has not been measured in trials.
In test tubes, linden extracts show mild antioxidant activity. In animal studies, some Tilia extracts appear to calm and reduce fear-like behaviour. Whether a cup of tea does anything similar in a person is not established.
Tradition calls linden a diaphoretic, meaning it makes you sweat. Any hot drink can do that. There is no clear proof that linden adds to the effect of the heat and water alone.
The dried flower, brewed as tea, is by far the most common form.
Common forms:
- Loose dried flowers with their bracts (pale, wing-like leaves). - Tea bags, often blended with chamomile or elderflower. - Liquid extract or tincture in alcohol.
Less common forms:
- Capsules of dried powder. - Linden honey, which is a food, not a medicine. - Linden flower absolute or oil, used in perfume and skin products.
Do not swallow perfume-grade linden oil or absolute. Those products are made for scent, not for eating.
Linden has been a household tea across Europe for centuries. German, French, Polish and Balkan folk practice all used it.
It was given as a hot infusion for feverish colds, to bring on sweating. It was also given in the evening for restlessness and for children who would not settle. Village herbals also named it for cramping belly pain.
The tree carried wide cultural weight. Village courts and meetings were held under the Linde in German-speaking lands. In the 20th century German health authorities listed linden flower tea for colds and cough, based mainly on this long use rather than on trial data.
Stop drinking it and get urgent help if you get swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, a widespread rash, or trouble breathing. These can be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
See a doctor rather than carrying on with tea if: - Your fever goes above 39C, or any fever lasts more than three days. - You are short of breath, or have chest pain. - A cough lasts more than three weeks. - Sleep problems or anxiety last more than a few weeks. - A child, an older adult or someone with a weak immune system becomes unwell.
In the UK, EU and United States, linden flower is sold as an ordinary herbal tea or food supplement. It is not a licensed medicine. In Germany it has a long-standing herbal listing for colds, based on traditional use.
Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.
What it is typically used for, usual dose, cautions, and the study behind it where real trial data exists.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
