What is Lachesis mutus? Lachesis mutus is a homeopathic remedy. It is made from the venom of the bushmaster snake, a large pit viper of South America. The snake is also called surukuku. Homeopaths give it for hot flushes, night sweats and sore throats. It is also used for symptoms that start on the left side of the body. It is a single remedy, so it is taken on its own. The venom is diluted over and over, so at 30C not one molecule of it is left. Trials do not show that it beats a dummy pill. Lachesis has a long place in homeopathy, but long use is not proof of effect, and this point is made once here only. How does Lachesis mutus work? Homeopathy is built on the idea that "like cures like". Raw bushmaster venom causes bleeding, heat and swelling. So homeopaths give the diluted venom to people with flushing, throbbing or bleeding problems. Each step of the making adds water or alcohol and a hard shake. Homeopaths believe this leaves an imprint of the venom behind. There is no known way in physics or biology for that to happen. By 12C, and far more so by 30C, no venom is left at all. So the remedy has no known way to act on your body. Any change you feel is most likely a placebo effect (feeling better because you expect to). What forms does Lachesis mutus come in? The most common form is a small sugar pellet that you let melt under the tongue. Liquid drops in an alcohol base are also sold. Usual strengths are 6C, 12C, 30C and 200C. Some homeopaths also use LM strengths. The bigger the number, the more the venom has been diluted away. Pellets are usually made with lactose (milk sugar). Drops usually contain alcohol. Check the label if either matters for you. Where it comes from: Lachesis came into homeopathy in 1828. Constantine Hering, a German-born doctor working in South America, prepared the venom and is said to have tested it on himself. It soon became one of the best known remedies in homeopathic practice. It is still listed in homeopathic texts and sold worldwide today. Its standing is within homeopathy alone, not in older herbal or folk systems.

Helps

What does Lachesis mutus help with? Hot flushes and night sweats around menopause: This is the best known use in homeopathy. Homeopaths pick it for flushes that rise upward, with a red face and a dislike of anything tight on the neck. We could not find a trial of Lachesis on its own for flushes. A few studies tested mixed homeopathic products that contained it, which cannot tell you what one ingredient did. Sore throat, mainly on the left side: Homeopaths use it for a throat that hurts more on the left, and more when swallowing liquids or saliva. There is no trial evidence for this use. A sore throat with fever, drooling, or trouble breathing or swallowing needs a doctor the same day. Do not treat that at home. Premenstrual tension and mood swings: Traditional homeopathic texts describe a picture of talkativeness, jealousy and tension that lifts once bleeding starts. That is a prescribing picture, not a tested effect. No human trial supports Lachesis for premenstrual symptoms. Varicose veins and heavy legs: Because raw venom affects blood and vessels, homeopaths link the remedy to purple, congested veins. Again, this reasoning is traditional. No trial shows the diluted remedy changes veins, swelling or leg pain. Compression stockings and medical review have real evidence behind them. Throbbing headaches: It is chosen for left-sided, pounding headaches that feel worse after sleep and better in fresh air. No trial evidence supports this. A sudden, very severe headache, or one with weakness, confusion or a stiff neck, is an emergency.

Where it comes from:

Lachesis came into homeopathy in 1828.

Who should avoid Lachesis mutus?

  • Do not use if you have been bitten by a snake or have any other emergency — call emergency services straight away
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor agrees, because very low dilutions may still hold traces of venom
  • Do not use if you take a blood thinner such as warfarin, heparin, apixaban or rivaroxaban, unless your doctor has said it is fine
  • Do not use if you take an antiplatelet medicine (a drug that stops blood cells sticking together to form clots) such as aspirin or clopidogrel, unless your doctor agrees
  • Do not use if you have a bleeding disorder such as haemophilia (a condition where blood does not clot properly) or a low platelet count
  • Do not use if you are about to have surgery or dental surgery within two weeks
  • Do not use if the label does not clearly state the potency, or if it lists real snake venom rather than a homeopathic dilution — raw bushmaster venom can kill
  • Do not use if you would be stopping or putting off a treatment your doctor has prescribed
  • Do not use if you have a severe sore throat with fever, drooling, or trouble breathing or swallowing — get medical help the same day
  • Do not use alcohol-based drops if you are avoiding alcohol, or if the remedy is for a young child

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor the same day if you have a sore throat with a high fever, drooling, or trouble breathing or swallowing.

Get urgent help for bleeding that will not stop, blood in your urine or stool, black tarry stools, or bruises that appear for no reason.

Also call a doctor for a sudden very bad headache, chest pain, a racing heartbeat, fainting, a swollen and painful leg, or any bleeding after childbirth. Book a normal appointment if hot flushes, sweats or period problems are wearing you down, so you can talk about treatments with real evidence behind them.

Evidence grades and traditional-use labels are explained in our methodology. Nothing here is medical advice.

This app is so cool! I've always wanted there to be a hub for all NATURAL remedies and preventative options but l've always had to do loads of digging to find the info I wanted for different natural products. HealisticMD has all the info I need in one place. It gave me various natural supplemental options for a condition I looked up, including what each remedy does and how much is usually recommended to take. It also gave me exact products I could buy for the problem I had looked up. It makes my process SO MUCH easier when I need to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to my needs.

There is a wealth of information on the app! I recently had bloodwork done and found I was deficient in a handful of vitamins and minerals (Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Iron, etc.) HealisticMD made it simple for me to find out what foods to eat/ supplements I needed to improve these deficiencies. It gives you so many ideas on prevention, natural health tips, where to buy the vitamins, when to take them, why, etc. I love how easy the app is to use too. I am currently working on getting pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to find compelling data along with supplement suggestions to aid in the process, some of which my fertility doctor wasn’t even aware of. Highly recommend downloading, after all health is one our greatest gifts!
